The
Experience

A traditional family home just north of Bideford – with the South West Coast Path a 10-minute drive away. Lucy welcomes you with a cream tea – or drinks if you arrive after teatime – and there’s plenty of space to spread out, including a sitting room made cosy with wood-burner and comfy armchairs, and a music room with a piano.

Fabulous river Torridge views accompany your breakfast, a generous table of cereals, yogurts, local bacon, kedgeree and eggy bread or eggs done any which way. Plan your day – perhaps catch a ferry to Lundy Island from Bideford Quay to see puffins, wild goats and the Lundy ponies.

Head to Westwood Ho! for seaside fun, and to Bideford for dinner – there’s lots of choice. Return to pat Archie the Shetland pony and wander down to the river through the woods – a haven for tawny and barn owls, peregrine falcon, squirrels, badgers and deer.

Reviews

What can I say, right from the warm welcome old keepers cottage was like home from home ... we are planning our next visit!

Stephen, Warwickshire

Everyone talks about the river views here and they are exceptional - and I'd love to have seen the peregrine falcon face-to-face with a squirrel that Lucy described seeing the day before... tawny and barn owls live in the wild garlicy woods here too.

Location

The neighbourhood

It’s under 10 minutes by car to Bideford's cafes and restaurants: Indian Spice, Italian Belluno, French Cafe du Parc at the Museum. Instow is five miles and has Johns, a good deli, Instow Arms and The Boathouse for good food with sandy estuary views. Picturesque Appledore is opposite on the south bank. Tapeley Park and Gardens is a seven-minute drive. Picnic on the beach at Westward Ho! (15 minutes). Hire bikes in Bideford and explore along the Tarka Trail Cycle Path. Visit Northam Burrows Country Park for acres of common land and salt marsh walks.

Local points of interest from Lucy Giddy

  • We are only 1 mile down a single track country lane (with passing places ) & 2 miles from the historic port of Bideford where Drake's contemporary Sir Richard Grenville lived and sailed from.
  • Originally the gamekeepers cottage on the Stuceley Estate Old Keepers is nestled in 35 acres of glorious North Devon countryside & woodland with stunning views out across the valley & River Torridge
  • Abundant bird and wildlife surround us. Not only do we have Marsh Tits, Woodpeckers & Nuthatches regularly feeding at the bird table but also you can take a woodland walk down to the river where you will often see the roe deer and salt marsh loving birds.
  • Access on to the beautiful miles of the Tarka Cycle Trail that meanders along the coast & through deepest, rural North Devon is a couple of miles away. We have secure lock up for bikes plus the use of washing/drying facilities for those hot cycling days !
  • Local attractions within a 15-20 minute drive include RHS Rosemoor, the Royal North Devon Yacht Club, South West Coast Path, Lundy Island Ferry (leave your car here as complimentary transfer to & from Bideford Quay), long sandy beaches & secluded coves
  • Great places to eat in the area ranging from cosy pubs with inglenook fireplaces to fabulous fish restaurants overlooking the estuary. Something for evevryone.

Introducing

Lucy Giddy

Lucy worked for the NHS for many years. She finally hung up her fob watch in 2015 and set up her B&B, which she enjoys hugely. She’s keen for guests to feel welcomed and looked after and leave feeling relaxed. She loves the outdoor life – walking, gardening, looking after their three horses – and also singing in the local Choral Society and playing their Steinway piano (which guests are also welcome to play). Lucy is happy to drop you at the ferry for Lundy.
