The
Experience

You’ll rarely find a more peaceful spot – or nicer owners. Catriona takes pleasure in ensuring her guests are well looked after, and gives you total privacy. The apartments are on the first floor of one wing – one overlooking a pretty garden and a vine-covered pavilion, the other with views of the park – its lawns, hilltop copses and woodland. (There’s a great feeling of history here, and when house and gardens are open to the public, you can take tea in Coach Hall!). All feels calm and fresh inside, with Farrow & Ball colours and seagrass matting, padded window seats and big sash windows, curtains, books and open fires. Kitchens are well-equipped, bathrooms are smart, and the master bedrooms – large and light – have kingsize beds topped with crisp linen. It’s a wonderful spot from which to explore – the lush Devon countryside, the north and south coasts, the National Trust houses, the cathedral city of Exeter; all lie within a 30-minute drive. Swings, paddocks of ponies and sheep, a barbecue for summer fun, and the nearest pub and farm shop two miles away. Lovely.

Local points of interest from Catriona Fursdon

  • Fursdon has been the home of the Fursdon family for nearly 8 centuries. We - David and Catriona - have lived here for 30 or so of those years, keeping the family line and estate going for the future!
  • We've recently revealed an 18th century vaulted ceiling in the Park Wing adding height and light to the spacious sitting room in the centre of the house.
  • It's very rural here but amazingly near to Exeter which has lots of restaurants, shops, a fabulous buzzy museum and lots of cultural things to do
  • In the summer we invite guests to join a house tour on our open days to hear about Fursdon history but if you come at another time - just ask if you're interested and I will try to find time to show you the 'formal' bits of the house.
  • Cream teas, flapjacks and chocoate biscuit cake are all on sale in the Coach Hall tearoom during the summer. There are lots of good pubs in the villages nearby and information on these is in a folder in each property.

Introducing

Catriona Fursdon

David and Catriona came to live at Fursdon in 1979, the 23rd generation of the family to be custodians of this ancient estate. They enjoy the challenge of conserving and developing the estate to keep it sustainable for future generations of family and visitors and have undertaken a large restoration programme over the past 30 years. The Fursdon’s love to share their passion for the place with cottage guests.
