The Experience

Down an avenue of oaks find a pretty church, a handsome rectory and Clarissa’s B&B with lovely views from every window. Guests are in one side of the house – you’ll find an elegant south-facing drawing room, full of beautiful things from Clarissa’s travels and with views over the formal gardens and the deer park. Up a wide staircase with the original pitched pine balustrade are bedrooms full of light, one en suite, the other with a generous bathroom next door.

Breakfast can be taken in the spacious hall, or in the garden under a giant cedar surrounded by wild flowers and with tidal views. You’ll feast on home baked bread, jams and marmalade, organic yogurts and honey. Everything is as organic and local as possible and if you have a special request just give Clarissa a bit of notice.

Wander your own section of the garden, visit the farm stores a short walk away, or book the wood-fired outdoor bathtub in the private copse. Birdwatch by the Exe, hire bikes, spend a day at the races.

Accommodation

Reviews

Stayed here with my wife. Charming is definitely the best descriptor! The house is gorgeous without being pretentious, and Clarissa was a wonderful host. We felt right at home here. Especially loved strolling along the estuary path and visiting the local pub which is only a short walk away. Wonderful place to catch our breath and recharge. Would visit again!

This is a wonderful home in a lovely secluded location, perfect for weekend get away from it all. Local pub by river 20 mins walk away along the banks of the estuary. Hostess charming. And very close to M5, can avoid Cornish crowds by just stopping here. Loved it.

"From home to home" Powderham House was the perfect location for us to stay when visiting our daughter who was at the time studying at the University in Exeter. 10 minutes into town. Clarissa made us feel at home straight away and we hope to come back in the spring and enjoy the garden. The views from the garden are stunning. Topsham Farmshop is an ideal stop to stock up on local produce and the use of the kitchen downstairs is a great plus.

Location

The neighbourhood

Wander the footpath to Powderham Castle and visit the farm shop, or head off along the cycle path to the sea and the start of the Jurassic Coast. The nearby station at Starcross is just one hop from Exeter on the two carriage train. The walk along the estuary for a pint at the Turf pub is beautiful and you'll spot many birds. The Haldon Hills and Dartmoor are close for bracing hikes.

Local points of interest from Clarissa Brown

  • Enjoy the peace and privacy of this major historic property. I can offer three different places to have breakfast! Have the luxury and the wild if you fancy the wood fired hot tub after a river or sea swim.
  • Walk along the South West Coastal Path to our local wonderful family-run pub "The Turf" only accessible by foot, boat or bike. The National Cycle Network 2 joins the Path at the end of our lane so why not cycle on round to Topsham and home by ferry.
  • Water enthusiasts will be busy with kite surfing, wake boarding, paddle boarding and sailing. And for those ashore bring your binoculars to observe the many estuary birds in this area of conservation.
  • Foodie heaven with many multi award winning restaurants where local chefs source from nearby farms alongside the delicious fresh seafood. Riverford Farm, Michael Caines, local secrets and even a floating cafe on the Exe.... just ask me my favourites.
  • Visit the independent shops of Totnes and Ashburton on your way up to the wilds of Dartmoor to see the famous ponies, walk the Tors then have a cream tea or a well earned splash in the fresh clear rivers.
  • Take the footpath to historic Powderham Castle, the seat of the Earls of Devon. Stop off at the farm shop and return past the Folly built in 1771 where the second Viscount Courtenay built a ballroom to entertain the suitors for his 13 daughters.

Introducing

Clarissa Brown

Devon-born Clarissa has lived at Powderham for over 20 years and is immensely knowledgeable about the area. The views from the house and garden are of the deer park and estuary, which is where you’ll find Clarissa when she’s not hosting – either gardening, sailing, hiking, paddle boarding or writing. She has always loved welcoming guests, and hope you’ll enjoy this special part of the country too.
