The
Experience
A beautiful small hotel on the loveliest square in town, a short stroll from the cathedral. The house dates to 1805 and was built for a major returning from the Raj. These days, it mixes quirky design with all the comforts you’d expect of a small, city hotel. It’s central, welcoming, the rooms are lovely, the dining room serves great bistro food and there’s a chic bar for cocktails or a pint of local ale. Downstairs, French windows at the back of the house draw you onto a small terrace, where you can eat in good weather, perhaps mussels in a white wine sauce, bangers and mash with a rich gravy, chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream. Potter about and find electric blue sofas, 50s starlets framed on the wall, old style radiators and beautiful art. Stylish bedrooms wait upstairs – some are bigger, all are lovely. Expect bold colours, sumptuous fabrics, Indian art, hi-tech gadgetry. Cool bathrooms come as standard, bigger rooms have free-standing baths. Exeter has lots to offer: Roman walls, a 12th-century cathedral, the imperious Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery. Topsham is close for river walks.

Local points of interest from Sally French
- Our 11 bedrooms are individually named after trades In the 17th and 18th centuries. Even our book collections are curated around the rooms!
- Are mobile phones your thing? We have collected several models over the years so check them out in the bar. Collectibles are a little obsession. From butterflies to beauties, maps to mirrors......
- We are committed to serving local produce, from the coffee at breakfast to the honesty bar in the rooms to the beer in the bar.
- We’re chuffed to have been named “Best Boutique Stay” for the whole of Devon in 2018. The same voters called our rates “really reasonable”!
- We’re out to #breakthechains: we’re independent, passionate about hospitality and offering a stunning amount more service, style and comfort than your average room for the night. We’re a small hotel with personality.
- Have we said independent and Individual? That’s why we say we’re “made in Exeter”. We take inspiration from the original (1805) bohemian owner of the house and bring modern comfort to a relaxed, clubby luxury.
