The
Experience

Sociable Astley has put love into every inch of her farm, from the smart bedrooms to the spick-and-span livery yard. She’s just down the hall and will let you tinkle the Bechstein while she scrambles eggs from her own hens for breakfast.Views look south over Exmoor National Park from a neat front garden; you can spend quiet moments here with a book surrounded by friendly dogs and quacking ducks, or potter around the lake.Bring walking boots, and perhaps your horse, and enjoy being well away from it all – the clearest night skies, trails to walk and abundant wildlife to spot from red deer to birds. Drive nine miles to hike across the historic Tarr Steps or 40 minutes to lovely Lynmouth on the coast.

Reviews

A tranquil and comfortable farmhouse on the slopes of Exmoor expertly overseen by Astley. We stayed for two nights and had a delightful weekend. Highly recommended.

Ian

We have had an absolutely delightful stay - from the comfortable room, beautiful views, and delicious breakfasts to the fantastic hospitality of Astley and excellent advice on how to fill our days in Exmoor. On our first night, we were directed out to one of the surrounding fields to see the red deer grazing at twilight which was absolutely magical. I would highly recommend you arrive without an itinerary and let Astley direct you to the most beautiful spots to visit and best places to dine. We hope to return before too long - thank you for a wonderful stay Astley!

Andrea

Seclusion, magnificent views, comfy beds, bright and pretty bedrooms, Tabor Hill Farm has it all. Enjoyed eggs for breakfast from the Farm’s own chickens, with all locally sourced bacon, sausages etc. Owner, Chief, Cook, ‘Astley’, the perfect host. Welcoming and happy to help locate local places of interest and restaurants to eat in. Astley always on hand to provide home made teas and dinner if pre-booked... do try...

Guy

This was our third time back to Tabor Hill and it gets better every time. Astley's welcome is now enhanced with an optional lovely locally sourced evening meal. This meant we could just collapse on arrival allowing us to wind down straight away. The horses were happy in big warm stables and the dog enjoyed mixing with the others downstairs. We slept well in our very comfy room so right from the start of the weekend after a smashing breakfast, we could hit the amazing Exmoor surrounding countryside and relax. It is a shame we could only stay the weekend but will definitely be re-booking soon.

Nigel

We had a wonderfully relaxing stay at Tabor Hill Farm. Astley made us feel very welcome and the room we stayed in was lovely - a luxurious bed, fantastic shower and stunning views. Cooked breakfast was delicious and served in a beautiful dining room. It is a really idyllic setting - the ideal place to wind down.

Marijke

We stayed for two nights and wished we could stay longer. Astley is the perfect hostess, nothing is too much trouble. From the first welcome, with delicious home made cakes and tea, to the moment you leave, she takes great care of you. The house in the most idyllic spot; you drive down a long track across the moor (no problem at all in our low car), gazing at the stunning views. Then once arrived all is peace and seclusion. The rooms are very comfortable, with great beds, good linens and the superb power showers mentioned by other reviewers. All is sparkling clean. Breakfast was very tasty ind

Location

The neighbourhood

From nearly 1,000 feet up, the moorland views roll away to the south and down to the church spire in the village of North Molton (three miles). This corner of Exmoor is a quiet spot with heath and fields spooling out around the farm, and walks and rides through its 200 acres. Great pub grub can be found at the London Inn in Molland (six miles) or the Royal Oak at Withypool (seven miles); it’s a 20-minute drive to the shops at South Molton.

Local points of interest from Astley Shilton Barlow

  • Landacre Bridge, a medieval bridge spanning the River Barle is just a 10 minute drive away. It is a lovely spot to picnic and admire the Exmoor Ponies, or you can walk the footpath following the river to Withypool or Simonsbath.
  • Tarr Steps the famous ancient clapper bridge spanning the River Barle, has wonderful riverside walks, just 15 minutes drive from Tabor Hill.
  • South Molton town offers a wide range of independent shops, tearooms, and an excellent Pannier Market on Thursdays and Saturdays. Dulverton is a very pretty town with great shopping and eating on offer.
  • Stunning moorland walks such as Molland Moor, Brendon Common, Dunkery Beacon and the Chains are all within a short driving distance.
  • For those wanting a bit of culture, Castle Hill Gardens, Marwood Gardens are within easy reach while RHS Rosemoor is a 45 minute drive.
  • Walks around the farm and out onto North Molton Hill offers guests the chance to spot Red Deer and gaze across to Dunkery Beacon to the west, Dartmoor to the south and Hartland Point in the far distance.

Introducing

Astley Shilton Barlow

Astley modernised the old house and added a livery yard - she loves being surrounded by horses and her four springer spaniels. She’s terrifically easy-going and is happy to share her passion for country life with her guests. Ask about her music collection – she might even play you a few tunes on the piano.
