Rooms sleep 2

Travellers look happy as they enter the main bar, all dark beams, flagstone floors and crackling fires… you almost imagine a distant Baskerville hound baying. This is an atmospheric inn that serves delicious home-cooked food – local, seasonal and British with a twist. Tuck into antipasto of pastrami, rosette saucisson and Black Forest ham; South Devon sirloin with mushrooms, vine tomatoes and French fries; and Mrs Cook’s fabulous lemon posset with blueberry compote. When suitably sated, slip off to the annexe and a nest of your own in one of three peaceful, very comfortable rooms, with gleaming oak floors heated underfoot; one room has its own private patio. Wake to a pretty garden with views to Brentor church and the moor, an exceptional breakfast and perhaps a cricket match to watch: the pub has its own ground and club. Settle back to the thwack of willow on leather with a pint of Palmer’s IPA. There’s Doom Bar too, Jail Ale from Princetown, and guest ales from Otter, Cotleigh, Teignworthy, Butcombe. What’s more, the pub is a dog-friendly zone – check out their website for photos of the residents.

We booked to stay at the Elephant's Nest based solely on the Sawday's write-up, we were not disappointed! Our room was excellent, the food was exceptional. Apparently breakfast is the most important meal of the day and Denise clearly believes it; I have never had a better Eggs Benedict and her Devilled Kidneys and Kedgeree are both second to none! We cannot wait for our next visit.

We went for a quiet off season break, and what a good choice. Arrived in time for lunch, only had the delicious starters to save ourselves for dinner. Shown to our room (No 2) which was well decorated and furnished and of the highest standard. Went for one of the recommended walks along the leats to work up an appetite for dinner. Dinner was excellent, our hosts were charming, the atmosphere was great. After a very good nights sleep, we were given perhaps the best B&B breakfast that I have had, and the dog enjoyed himself too! We will return.
