The Experience

Charlie and Julia (handily next door in their B&B) are passionate conservationists (a biomass boiler, underfloor heating, locally-sourced building materials, natural oils, water-based paints) but they haven’t compromised on aesthetics in their larch-cladded creation. Find a thoughtfully designed open space with a contemporary feel, a living room with an L-shaped sofa, sleek wooden floors, a bio-ethanol fire, a flat screen 3D telly, an excellent kitchen with sharp knives (Charlie is a chef) and giant glass doors for views over the East Devon countryside; fling them open on sunny days (you may hear the distant hum of the A30 but it’s quieter at night). There’s an outdoor shower here too, for muddy children (or dogs) and both can cavort safely in the garden surrounded by fields. Bedrooms are on either side of the living room: find well-dressed beds, good lighting and glass doors to bring the outside in. Borrow bikes for adventurous days, start walking straight from the door, return to a soak in a proper big bath with Eco-Boutique’s goodies (from one you can watch telly with a floating remote.) Lovely.

Reviews

First rate accommodation and a beautiful area of Devon. Everything you need is included in the Granary, a real home from home with a lovely secure garden. Exmouth, Topsham, Dartmouth all within easy reach (in a car). Would highly recommend.

Robert, Cheltenham

Modern, stylish and well equipped accommodation on a single floor, with nice views from the settee. Good for dogs, with an enclosed garden and an outside shower. Home made bread and plenty of other tasty food/drink was provided for us on arrival. Some good places to eat in the area. Located about 30 minutes from the south coast. A most enjoyable stay.

Introducing

Charlie & Julia Hutchings

Charlie and Julia moved here in 1999 to do B&B and renovated from top to toe - including installing a wood-burning biomass boiler providing hot water and central heating, and solar panels to generate day-time electricity. They're a smooth team, doing everything from cleaning to linen to bread-making. Their ethos is very much about reducing food miles and supporting the local community. They both volunteer for Riding for Life: www.devonfreewheelers.org.uk - Julia manages the calls, Charlie does urgent medical night runs by motorbike.
