The
Experience
The road from Lynton is a great way in, through woods that cling to a hill with the sea below. As for the Old Rectory, it’s a proper small hotel and a very sociable sort of place. Three acres of spectacular gardens wrap around you, and Exmoor deer drink from the pond.Inside, Huw and Sam continue to lavish love and money in all the right places. Their most recent addition is an orangery with smart sofas and warm colours, then doors onto the garden for afternoon tea in the sun. Interiors are soothing: Farrow & Ball colours, the odd stone wall, a little sitting room, fresh flowers and books everywhere.Bedrooms are just as good and heaped with treats: digital radios, flat-screen TVs, a balcony here, a leather sofa there. Spin into the restaurant for a set four-course meal: your hosts are fabulous cooks.

Location
The neighbourhood
In the tiny hamlet of Martinhoe, this Georgian house was once rectory to the ancient church. High on the cliffs at the western end of Exmoor, the hamlet is made up of just seven houses, a former village school, and a coastguard’s cottage. Miles of deserted trails surround you (don’t miss the dreamy Doone Valley) while the wildlife includes buzzards and dolphins.
Local points of interest from Huw Rees & Sam Prosser
- We are in a remote hamlet in Exmoor National Park. We are just off the South West Coast Path above the gloriously romantic Woody Bay. There are numerous stunning walks with jaw dropping scenery in the area.
- We are right by the sea. Wild swimming, surfing and secret beaches are all closeby(our favourite is ittle known Rockham Beech near Mortehoe) . You can also visit Lundy by ferry or by fast rib - which is the only way to see the dramatic Exmoor coast!
- For something more sedate, visit Arlington Court and Grounds, the gothic Knightshayes or the fantastic Dunster Castle
- Martinhoe is our village, well hamlet really. Hoe is a local word meaning "high ground by the sea" and we have our very own Roman Fort.. We are The Old Rectory to the ancient 11th cebtury chirch of St Martin

Introducing
Huw Rees & Sam Prosser
Owners Huw and Sam have created the kind of place they had always wanted to stay at but could never find – “a relaxed country house hotel in classic-contemporary style, in an amazing location.” They fell in love with the Old Rectory before they had even opened the door. And its lush garden, through which Devon’s most famous waterfall, Hollow Brook, cascades.
