The Experience

Walk straight in to an open-plan living room with colourful rugs, books and games for when you’re forced indoors, interesting art on the walls and a sofa right in front of the window so you can admire the views, or watch the plentiful birdlife – chaffinches, tits, goldcrests and more. A well-equipped kitchen to one side has all you need for cooking up a storm, you’ll find a bottle of white wine in the fridge and an antique table for dining. Double doors open onto a patio area which faces east – you’re free to follow the sun down the wildflower meadows for afternoon and evening rays.

Upstairs to a light and bright bedroom with a beamed roof, a little table in the window with views and a pretty antique chair. A spick and span shower downstairs sports fluffy towels and Cole & Lewis soaps and lotions.

Footpaths crisscross the area and you can walk to a good pub, the Yarcombe Inn in 20 minutes.

Reviews

The Wheelhouse Yarcombe is set in the most idyllic part of the Black Down Hills countryside with breathtakingly beautiful views! The house is so well equipped for your everyday needs, to include some essential condiments; whether you are in need of a warming soup, tea or a shortbread biscuit your excellent hosts Maggie & Matthew are already one step ahead to make your stay welcoming and comfortable. They even leave you a bottle of milk for your tea and wine if you wish for something stronger! My dog loves the grounds and I enjoy the view from the sofa, we return regularly, highly recommend!

Nicole, Essex

Perfect stopover spot for a couple of days of peace and quiet. Convenient location for discovering Somerset and East Devon with lovely Honiton on the doorstep with its bustling high street and antique shops. Great open views of the surrounding countryside and perfect for stargazing too. Owners were the perfect hosts, couldn't wish for more.

Christina, Tunbridge Wells

Come for this very quiet, non-touristy part of Devon in the beautiful Blackdown Hills. Walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, nature lovers and those wishing for peace and quiet will be very happy here. There's lots to do nearby - the Jurassic coastline is nearby and some superb beaches. Return to a very warm and comfortable base.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're 800 feet above sea level and overlooking the Yarty Valley. Yarcombe has a pretty church and a pub with good local ciders but Honiton is only a 10-minute drive for The Holt, owned by the Otter Brewery and some very good antique shops. Barleymow's Farm Shop is 5 miles for locally-farmed meat and a superb cheese counter. It's half an hour to Axminster for River Cottage or the Jurassic coast.

Introducing

Maggie & Matthew Tomkinson

Maggie and Matthew live next to the Wheelhouse. They've always loved the area with its quiet, beautiful views over the Yarty Valley, the birdsong in the morning and the walks available just on the doorstep. The community is friendly and they just want their guests to be able to snuggle inside with a good book, or sit on the patio looking at the views and drinking a coffee or glass of wine.
