The Experience

No need to stand on ceremony at this wisteria-clad Georgian home – you’re greeted warmly with something home baked, there are two sitting rooms to choose from, an honesty bar and a big garden with a copper beech at centre stage. Lovely to have breakfast out here on a sunny day while your children play hide and seek or bounce on the trampoline. You’re well fed, mostly by Chris, on homemade muesli, local bacon and sausages, smoked salmon and eggs, specials if you’re staying longer.

The village has a post office and The Bear & Blacksmith pub, renowned for good food. A five-minute drive brings you to Torcross and the long expanse of shingle that is Slapton Beach on one side of the road, while on the other is the atmospheric nature reserve of Slapton Ley, beloved by birdwatchers and walkers.

Bedrooms have an air of opulence, beds are large, bathrooms gleaming, all with proper tubs, thick towels and Ren soaps and shampoos.

You can tell the owners have thought long and hard about what makes a good boutique B&B: stylish interiors with luxurious details, a well-stocked bar for a post-beach, pre-dinner cocktail perhaps, a knock-out breakfast to set you up for a day exploring this AONB, toys and games for children, treats for canine guests - it's all here and more and pulled off in a seemingly effortless way. I'd definitely go and stay but I only live five miles away...!

The neighbourhood

It's a 10-minute drive to Kingsbridge for The Old Bakery and vegetarian lunches at The Harbour House Café. Totnes has a great organic pub, The Bull. Amazing Coast Path or circular walks have dreamy views. Take paddleboards to the estuary and you can zip up and down the creeks, stopping off at The Millbrook or The Crabshell. There are beaches for safe swimming and wild surfing, Dartmouth hikes.

Local points of interest from Katie & Chris Denny

  • Local Devon beaches. There are dozens within easy reach, from secluded sandy coves like beautiful Lannacombe and Mattiscombe Sands to the stunning surf spot at Bantham. There are great spots for swimming, paddle boarding, fishing, surfing.
  • The South West Coast Path. This area offers some of the best walks in the UK. There are so many spectacular circular walks. Take in the loop from Gara Rock to Mill Bay and hop across to Salcombe on the pedestrian ferry.
  • Salcombe is a pretty fishing harbour town with great pubs, restaurants, delis and independent shops. Great for all ages and be sure to stroll across to North Sands beach.
  • Pubs & restaurants. There are some great options in the local area. From gastro pubs serving up fabulous local produce to beach shacks offering seafood and fizz. There are two great pubs within walking distance and many more options within a short drive.
  • Dartmoor National Park is a must visit for its stunning scenery, excellent walking trails and cosy traditional pubs.
  • Rainy day? No problem. We're midway between the gorgeous harbour towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth. Bohemian, bustling Totnes is 30 minutes away and antiquey Ashburton just a little further on. Both feature a wealth of cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Katie & Chris Denny

Katie was a child psychologist and Chris worked in business development for an IT company. They lived in London but had had enough and wanted a complete lifestyle change after they had their first child. They bought The Whitehouse in 2019 and had much renovating to do while also having another baby. They are charming, fuss-free hosts who pull out all the stops to make your stay a memorable one.
