The
Experience

The Grays have lavished attention on their stylish reinterpretation of this former barn at Twistgates – and they know what makes for a calm and comfortable stay. A single flight of stairs takes you to your open-plan apartment with French doors to a little balcony and views of the Blackdown Hills for fine sunsets. Good lighting, pretty fabrics, soft grey walls and a fine antique bedstead lift the restful palette of granite worktop, wooden beams and polished dining table. The corner slipper bath and fun recycled finds such as the ship’s ladder, vintage suitcase and campaign chest add character. The mod cons are top quality – in the shared downstairs laundry, pristine kitchen area and waterfall shower room – as are the bedding and towels. So, relax and enjoy this clever space; take to the sofa after a day trip – Suzanne particularly recommends Killerton, Burrow Farm Gardens, Beer and Branscombe – or walk and watch for wildlife like the buzzard which paroles the woods by the stream. This is a great area for food – to cook in or eat out; close to Honiton and main routes but in real, deep Devon countryside.

Reviews

We stayed in the Apple Loft for a short break and cannot praise it highly enough. The scrupulously clean apartment, was comfortable and well equipped with everything you would need to make a holiday a success. When your toasty warm inside the view from the sofa was lovely and can be appreciated even on a cold foggy spring day. It is definitely a place that you would want to return to.

The Apple Loft is a wonderful place to stay - incredible views, warm, cosy, well equipped and in a great rural location to reach many places of interest. It is a well thought out space with some wonderful finishing touches, highly recommended!

A lovely, relaxing stay in a beautiful barn loft. It feels very luxurious with the details carefully thought out. Simple but stylish with everything you need. Peaceful views from the balcony, super comfortable bed and bath. Refreshing to be treated to candles too! Excellent directions - thank you!

Directions to Twistgates Farm were excellent. Crisp white snowdrops & buttery crocuses welcomed us. Then we spied Apple Loft. As a captain’s cabin astern a galleon, our apartment rose through the trees. What a surprise. Heart shaped scones, jam & clotted cream awaited us. Then we saw the view from the patio windows. What a view! We found the wonderfully tempting slipper bath (candles provided) & then spied the king sized Victorian style iron bed (can we fit it in the car!) Cups of Earl Grey steaming, we sat on the sofa stoically devouring scones, jam & cream. Did I mention the view!

What an amazing stay! Upon arrival, although early, we were very warmly greeted and the cream tea was delicious. We could not believe how gorgeous the room is and how stunning the views are! In addition, the whole loft is perfectly equipped which made the whole stay very fun and easy. We both slept exceptionally well as the bed and pillows are dreamy! Location is superb - we particularly enjoyed our trip to Beer, Lyme Regis and Sidmouth. The cherry on top for me was the gorgeous candle lit bubble bath before bed. We could not ask for anything more and we will 100% be coming back to stay soon.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Suzanne Gray

  • The area is bursting with wonderful fresh locally sourced foods for you to enjoy; delicious breads, cheeses, meats, fish, beers and, of course, cider. Try an award winning ice cream from Otter Valley, really yummy and only 10 minutes from us!
  • Hunt for fossils along the Jurassic Coast, lunch on freshly caught crab in the picturesque fishing village of Beer, wander around tranquil Burrow Farm Gardens, a real gem just up the road from us, or explore antique shops and galleries in Honiton.
  • Eateries to suit your mood and pocket from grand surroundings at the PIG at Coombe to the relaxed style of the Holt restaurant in Honiton. Plenty of quintessential inns and pubs in-between, we're spoilt for choice and have many recommendations to share.
  • From the front door choose between a gentle stroll down quiet lanes and by the river to watch the local bird life, or boot up for a hike in the Blackdown Hills (AONB). East Devon Way, the South West Coast Path, Exmoor and Dartmoor are handy too.
  • History abounds, Iron Age forts to D Day connections. Exeter's medieval buildings and magnificent cathedral, Dunkeswell Abbey, National Trust properties - Killerton with tiny post office, mill, cottage, acres of land and 'The Big House' is very special.
  • Axminster (25 mins) is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall territory and River Cottage HQ. As no holiday to Devon is complete without a Cream Tea home made scones, jam made from our own fruit, and lashings of clotted cream await your arrival at the Apple Loft.
