The Experience
In one of the loveliest parts of South Devon, you’ll find Fingals, a magical jumble of a place in a hidden valley. Your apartment has a big living space with a wood-burner for chilly days, a kitchen with all you need and truly comfy bedrooms. You also have your own private outdoor space with a barbecue but if you choose to come as one large party and take Lower Mill too, you can spread out.
There are books and board games for rainy days, a heated indoor pool, gym and sauna, games room with a snooker table, and outside an immaculate grass tennis court (bring your own rackets). The honesty bar in the main house is where you can go for a drink but also to find loads of information about what to do – this is a sociable sort of place where you can make friends.
Walk, bike, sail, paddle board and row, or shop for fabulous ingredients at local markets. Come back and light the barbecue while the children have (yet) another swim.

We chose The Upper Mill for a small family reunion and it couldn't have been more perfect. Super comfy, great facilities (couldn't keep the kids out of the pool) and exceptionally friendly hosts. Blessed with warm weather we ate on the terrace every day and didn't need to venture far, although the village of Dittisham is quite delightful and has the best lunchtime cafe (The Anchorstone right on the river's edge) in the world!

I can't recommend The Upper Mill highly enough. We grabbed just four days in the summer but wish it could have been so much longer. Plenty of space for everyone, the comfiest of beds, quite superb grass tennis court - we simply have to go back!

Location
The neighbourhood
Walk and catch the ferry to visit Greenway, Agatha Christie's house. Walk to the river for sailing lessons and you're close to the coast. Walking and cycling are superb (you can borrow mountain bikes) but you can also swim, sail, row and paddle board. Blackpool sands and Slapton (pebble beaches) are 25 minutes in the car. Three pubs and the Anchor Stone café are a 20-minute walk.
Local points of interest from Richard & Sheila Johnston
- You are spoilt for outdoor activities here. Walk Green Lanes from our door, learn to sail on the River Dart just a mile away, take the whole family canoeing from the creek or crabbing on the village pontoon for hours of fun.
- If you fancy a little sleuthing, jump on the ferry across to Agatha Christie's holiday home at Greenway on the banks of the River Dart. There are mystery trails in the grounds and the house as well as stunning views and excellent cream teas in the cafe.
- Our favourite beaches require a bit of an effort to reach - private coves with rock pools and absolutely no modern facilities! We'll let you in on their secret locations when you arrive!
- We have two steam trains locally for both big and little kids to enjoy. Kingswear to Paignton with great views of the Bay or Totnes to Buckfastleigh with Rare Breeds, Otters and Butterflies to see at attractions near the stations.
- Wonderful cafes, bistros, pubs and restaurants will offer you sumptuous meals in every village or town or even on the beach. Local fish, meat and even veggies are colourful and so yummy - you will be rolling home at the end of your holiday!
- The weekend market in Totnes is just wild. Full of crazy stalls with hints of your past - aromas of patchouli oil, folk wearing patchwork and with dreadlocks and beads in their hair will serve you organic and home made products to remind you of your stay.

Introducing
Richard & Sheila Johnston
Richard and Sheila have been running Fingals for over 30 years, first as a hotel and now as self-catering properties. It's grown and expanded organically over the years but the easy-going and fuss-free atmosphere is down to their personalities. This is a lifestyle choice for them and they are kind, generous and interesting. They have an environmental policy for recycling and energy.
Families will love these places - or for big reunions take both places which can then be linked via and outdoors staircase. Children will have a great time exploring the Fingals estate- table tennis, table football and a swimming pool (amongst other things) are all to be discovered. You are in the perfect spot close to the River Dart, beaches and great places to eat. Abandon the car and head out for walks from the doorstep, or head over to Dartmouth on the car ferry.
