The
Experience

A cedar-clad barn conversion on a working farm that blends into the beautiful landscape, is completely practical and with a clean, uncluttered feel. The tall, beamed open-plan living areas, with limestone floors, wood-burners, local art and leather sofas, are bright and airy. Traditional bedrooms have Farrow & Ball colours, thickly-lined curtains, luxurious linen and plump towels in sleek bathrooms. The bigger unit, White’s Ground – with space for ten to dine when the whole barn is let to one group – has a lighter, more contemporary feel than Fox Ditch with its vintage pieces and cosier colours. Both have kitchens with all the mod cons you could need, sage green units with sturdy worktops and French doors to the veranda and gardens. Views of the Stour River Valley and Blackmore Vale are particularly magnificent from White’s. Do walk up Hambledon Hill with its breathtaking views into Wiltshire and Somerset. You’re only half a mile down a no-through lane from the perfect village of Childe Okeford, Shaftesbury’s nine miles away.

Reviews

We took both barns for our stay and had a great time. The accommodation is very comfortable with new fittings and furnishings. Views were great as were access to bridleway walks.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Lucinda Sunnucks

  • Chisel Barn is set in stunning countryside, but is less than a mile from Child Okeford, the nearest village. There is great walking on the doorstep with the Iron Age Fort of Hambledon Hill and Hod Hill. We love dogs and they are safe in enclosed gardens.
  • Child Okeford is a gem of a village with a wonderful village store and post office, an organic farm shop with art gallery and café. And of course a pretty Dorset church whose bells you can hear in the evening.
  • Designed with care, the barns are equally good for families with babies and young children, and also very convenient for people with mobility issues since all rooms are on one floor.
  • Varied places to eat nearby from a child friendly café at Gold Hill Organic Farm to a great range of pubs – details in the guest file. With notice you can order freshly cooked food for delivery.
  • If you are after culture or shopping Dorchester and Salisbury are under an hour away; Bath and Southampton about an hour and a quarter. Well placed for a garden tour of Dorset and Somerset.
  • The coast is withiin easy reach for a day trip. Kimmeridge, and Lulworth are an hour away. The fabulous west Dorset beaches near Bridport and Lyme Regis are further away but beautiful to visit out of season.
