The Experience

At the end of a private track that wends through National Trust land is this beautiful spot. Sea and cliffs stretch out ahead and you can see the entire length of Chesil Beach. When the wind blows from the east you can hear the surf against the stones; behind is a bluebell wood full of songbirds. You can gaze on the view to Portland from the kitchen table too, as toes, pets and wellies are warmed by a super green Rayburn. Interiors are cosy and without fuss: the TV room has heaps of DVDs, the snug is ideal for a post clifftop-walk snooze. Bedrooms upstairs are restful with good beds dressed in white and the master room has the best views, down to valley and sea. Bathrooms are simple and spotless. Owner Veronica is an artist, with a studio in the garden, she lives in the main part of this old farmhouse and is on hand should you need anything. Children can meet resident pigs, hens, (you can buy the eggs and bacon for breakfast!) goats and sheep. Fossils, art and lovely Bridport are all a hop and you can’t avoid the Jurassic Coast – it’s two fields away.

A wonderful house in a gorgeous setting. Cliff top walks, forests, and serenity. With Bridport only 10 minutes away.

Matthew, London

Just had wonderful relaxing stay with my dog, Whisper. The house looks like The Durrells house in Corfu, and is set in beautiful surroundings. Listen to the dawn chorus, not a car to be heard! Comfy beds and spacious rooms. Can recommend this holiday cottage, especially if you're looking for peace and quiet!

Maureen, Thame

Perfect for a family holiday or for a group. The views to the sea and cliffs from the master bedroom and living room are terrific, and it's a short walk to more views and then the beach. The house is easy to love - clean, and with a surprising number of bathrooms - and interesting if you're into Georgian architecture. There is a really nice, comfortable "cottage" feel to it, especially with the slow-combustion fire going on a cool evening. Art classes with Veronica are very highly recommended. If you're thinking of staying here, my advice is: do it.

Jeremy, Hatfield

A comfortable, spacious, family friendly house with a sunny terrace, perfect for our three generational visit. The views (specially from the master bedroom were marvellous as were the walks across the fields to the coastal path. We enjoyed a delicious cream tea at the nearby Down Farmhouse Cafe and their lunch menu looked good too. Fresh bedlinen and soft towels were supplied and Veronica was very friendly and helpful.

Sarah, Chipping Norton

I am loathe to write this as you will all scupper availability but it only seems fair to say... We have enjoyed three very happy and memorable holidays at the Down House and look forward to many more to come. Veronica and her sons are charming and considerate hosts; the house is warm, comfortable and spacious; the views are breath-taking and sunrises worth waking early for; walks from the door either towards the coast or up onto beautiful Eype Down... This place is perfect.

Helena, London

The location is perfect. Walking to the beach and local pub and cliff top walks from the door. We didn't explore the wood behind but we'd love to come back. . Well placed for visiting lots of great places nearby. very comfortable and very warm. Very friendly and helpful owner.

Edward, London

A spacious and well equipped house set in a truly beautiful location. Fantastic walks straight from the door down to the coastal path, and only about a mile down to the nearest beach. Also lots to do in the nearby area within a half hour drive. Veronica was great and very helpful with all of our queries.

Eleanor, London

Magical location with spectacular views. The house was very spacious and comfortable. Veronica was very helpful and accommodating. The view from the master bedroom every morning was breathtaking! Lovely walks down to the beach and across to Seatown and Westbay. Roads leading to the property a little tight and worse for wear but well worth it when you get there. Worth noting that any elderly or young members may struggle with the walks so a car definitely needed. Would definitely recommend and would have no hesitation in staying again. Thank you for a very memorable holiday.

Fantastic place - gorgeous location, very relaxed and delightful host Veronica made us incredibly welcome. The house is perfect for families with children, unpretentious and very practical with lovely touches.. Veronica's obvious artistic bent is very evident throughout. Fantastic walking straight out from the house to amazing countryside/coastal paths. Veronica's pet sheep were a real hit with our children as were the brilliant 'nets' in the garden (strung from trees like spiders webs which the children could climb on). Thank you for a fab weekend, we hope to be back soon. Dan and Mel

We had a fabulous holiday at Down House. The setting is perfect, tucked away above the cliffs, with views down the coast and out to sea from the terrace and main bedrooms. It’s quiet and peaceful and yet you can walk straight out on to the coastal path from the house. The house is roomy and comfortable, with a large kitchen/dining room/sitting area which is perfect for families, and two more sitting rooms. The café nearby had delicious food, and would cook meals for you to take home. You could walk to a pebble beach, or drive to sandy ones - we had great weather and swam every day!

We've got 4 loud and energetic kids aged between 15 and 3 and finding nice places to go on holiday is not easy. We visited Down House in February half term and had a fantastic time. The house is big, warm, with stunning views. Its practical and un-fussy, simple serviceable and robust decor, essential if you have Kids. They can rush straight out of the door into the countryside, past the pigs on the way. Had a brilliant day collecting fossils at Lyme. Lovely laid back owner Veronica give the kids clay to make their own ammonites when we got back. Cooked on Rayburn, lit fires, had fun.

Wow! What an eventful 3 nights at the lovely Down House. We drove down thru the ferocious “Valentine’s Day Storm”, arriving with our 4 little girls in the dark, battered by wind & rain. So it was hugely welcoming to find Veronica & her son had already got the house ready for us on arrival, with the heating up high & extra wood for the fire. The house is full of character & spacious for a 3-bed place property especially downstairs. The beautiful old building was great for the kids to romp & play (inside & out). Veronica even brought over some modeling clay to keep them amused. A great holiday.

Lovely location, Veronica welcoming and helpful. Easy walks from front door to West Bay and Seatown. The house is cosy, unpretentious and everything you need. We liked cooking on the Rayburn, although there is a cooker and snuggling up in front of the fire. We were looking for somewhere to meet with friends and this was perfect, enjoying good food in a great location. The views over the coast from the dining table and bedroom are awesome. We would love to return.
