The Experience

A good choice for family holidays with plenty of seating for all, a well-equipped kitchen, a dining area with picture windows and a terrace for view-filled al fresco meals. One of the bedrooms is downstairs, perfect for those who find stairs difficult. This is the owners’ holiday home too and they’ve thought of everything to make your stay special, including toys for children, a handy extra fridge and drying racks for wet gear in the garage.

You can walk along the coast path to West Bexington in 25 minutes for a couple of restaurants, or stock up with local produce in Bridport which has independent shops and a street market every Wednesday and Saturday. Fire up the barbecue, open the wine, then retire to the double swing facing the sea. You’ll feel in holiday mode.

Bedrooms are simple and charming with pretty quilts and you’ll fall asleep listening to the waves lapping against the shingle.

This was our third stay at this wonderful house which wants for nothing. The location is stunning and there is plenty to see and do locally.

Five of us stayed in October including my 80year old parents. We had such a wonderful time. The location is stunning with sweeping views of the English Channel. The house is big and has lots of different spaces to get away from each other if you need to! Kitchen is fully equipped - you don’t need to bring anything. I also love that the house is still owned by family members, I wouldn’t ever sell it. It’s gorgeous.

The setting is a real wow. You arrive along the shingle beach and then can see no other buildings. The house is warm and comfortable. If anything there is too much kitchen equipment so there are few places to store your own. The dinning area has a fabulous. Outlook, the lounge a cosy fire. The weather whilst we were there was stormy so very exciting. The upstairs beds and baths were. excellent . The downstairs bed is comfortable but in a very small room. The wet room was vg indeed

I'd go back for the views alone! You're perfectly positioned to explore the beautiful Dorset coastline with lots of great walking from the door. It's a cosy, lived-in sort of place with plenty of character and home comforts. You have everything you need to cook up feasts, plus plenty of books and games to while away rainy days.

Location

The neighbourhood

There is a farm shop at West Bexington, open a couple of days a week – if you drive it takes 15 mins. The Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens and The Swannery are 1.6 miles, and in the village you'll find cafés and pubs. The National Trust Hive Beach and Café are eight miles. There are plenty of family friendly beaches with life guards in summer – Weymouth and Dorchester are 12 miles, Bridport 11.

Local points of interest from Sophie & Kate

Walking: There are so many beautiful walks front the front door, along the coast and through the fields on the National Trust dedicated routes.
Fishing: Chesil Beach is one of the most popular beach fishing destinations in the UK. The 18 mile stretch of shingle is a stunning place to fish and it offers fishing opportunities for anglers of all abilities.
Swimming: Sea swimming can be great fun but BEWARE, the sea is dangerous and there is a very strong current. Do not swim alone.
Sub Tropical Gardens: Probably one of the best gardens of its type in the world. Magnificent Victorian walled garden set in 20 acres of woodland valley. The unique micro climate enables rare and exotic species from all over the world to thrive here.
Golf: Just outside Bridport is a public golf course (15 minutes drive away). Outstandingly beautiful vista awaits all who play the course with scenic views not only over the sea and shore, but inland as well.
Fossil Hunting: Charmouth (30 minutes drive away) offers several organised fossil trips. Lyme Regis (45 minutes drive) was the home to Mary Anning, collector, dealer, and palaeontologist who became known around the world.

Sisters Sophie and Kate look after the house that their great uncle bought in the 50s. Over time they've extended it and made it more comfortable and homely for guests whilst retaining a family feel and creating happy memories for all who stay. You'll have contact with a housekeeper during your stay.
