The Experience

It’s not just the location that’s special – Greenbanks has been a treasured holiday home for generations, filled with family history. A working open fire and uninterrupted sea views mean on rainy days time spent simply gazing out of the window is far more than just bearable. Walkers can join the coastal path from the door and if you get drenched there’s a heated drying rack in the utility room/garage for wet gear.

Bedrooms (one downstairs) and bathrooms are simple, comfortable and as clean as a whistle. The kitchen is roomy enough for convivial cooking, there’s an extra fridge in the garage and you can stock up with local produce in Bridport which has independent shops and a street market every Wednesday and Saturday.

The garden has a lovely terrace with tables and chairs, a swing looking out to sea, a lawn for games and a barbecue for summer nights. Walk straight down to the sea for spectacular sunsets and pebble walking.

We think you'll love

  • Being so close to the sea for cloud and wave watching
  • Walking along the beach to The Club House for breakfast, lunch and supper (including cocktails)
  • Getting the fire up the chimney on cold nights and battening down the hatches

I'd go back for the views alone! You're perfectly positioned to explore the beautiful Dorset coastline with lots of great walking from the door. It's a cosy, lived-in sort of place with plenty of character and home comforts. You have everything you need to cook up feasts, plus plenty of books and games to while away rainy days.

The neighbourhood

The house is perched at the very end of the coastal road and has spectacular views. You're in between Abbotsbury and West Bexington. There are gorgeous walks inland or along the coast, fishing is productive on the beach below and birdwatchers should bring binoculars. Fossil hunt from Charmouth or Lyme Regis, or visit independent shops and markets in Bridport.

Local points of interest from Sophie & Kate

  • Walking: There are so many beautiful walks front the front door, along the coast and through the fields on the National Trust dedicated routes.
  • Fishing: Chesil Beach is one of the most popular beach fishing destinations in the UK. The 18 mile stretch of shingle is a stunning place to fish and it offers fishing opportunities for anglers of all abilities.
  • Swimming: Sea swimming can be great fun but BEWARE, the sea is dangerous and there is a very strong current. Do not swim alone.
  • Sub Tropical Gardens: Probably one of the best gardens of its type in the world. Magnificent Victorian walled garden set in 20 acres of woodland valley. The unique micro climate enables rare and exotic species from all over the world to thrive here.
  • Golf: Just outside Bridport is a public golf course (15 minutes drive away). Outstandingly beautiful vista awaits all who play the course with scenic views not only over the sea and shore, but inland as well.
  • Fossil Hunting: Charmouth (30 minutes drive away) offers several organised fossil trips. Lyme Regis (45 minutes drive) was the home to Mary Anning, collector, dealer, and palaeontologist who became known around the world.

Sophie & Kate

Sisters Sophie and Kate are the custodians of two family homes, both on Sawday’s: one in Dorset that their Great Uncle bought in the 50s and one in France that their parents bought in the 70s. Over time both houses have been made comfortable and homely for guests whilst retaining a family feel and creating happy memories for all who stay. You’ll have contact with a housekeeper during your stay.
