Lovely rooms, super food and owners who go out of their way to make every stay here special - don’t miss the cheese board

This is a lovely restaurant with rooms in a pretty Dorset village – small and friendly, nicely homespun, owner-run and owner-cooked. Emmanuelle and Mark love their world, it's a way of life and they share it with guests happily and generously. Downstairs, there's a smart sitting room with stripped floors and maps for walkers. Upstairs, a clutch of pretty bedrooms wait with warm colours, attractive fabrics, comfy beds and spotless bathrooms. They're very well priced, so splash out on the bigger rooms and find a sofa or a separate sitting room. Not that you'll linger long. Mark's food is the big draw, much of it sourced within 20 miles. You eat in a pretty dining room with an open fire roaring beyond a couple of sofas. It's delicious stuff, perhaps game terrine with ale chutney, slow-cooked lamb with village vegetables, then pears poached in sloe gin with chocolate ice cream. Best of all is the cheese board, a tasting menu of ten local cheeses – utterly irresistible. You can walk it all off a few miles west at Hambledon Hill (a prehistoric hill fort) with big country views. Brilliant.

"Our thanks to Mark and Emmanuelle for a memorable stay. They certainly gave us a warm and very friendly welcome. La Fosse exceeded our expectations- the accomodation was superb and the food first class. We thought that the breakfasts were the best that we had experienced! WE are most grateful for the care and attention to detail that made our 'surprise birthday dinner' such a success.."

"Have visited La Fosse on three occasions. Each time we have been very impressed with the accommodation and the food, the owners are extremely dedicated and make every effort to ensure their guests are well looked after. The bedrooms are very comfortable and the food of a very high standard. Can't wait to go back again."

"From the moment we had arrived we knew we were in for a wonderful stay. After warmly welcoming us, Mark then asked if we would like fresh milk for our room! The room was spacious with a kingsize bed, we could watch television/DVDs (available on the landing) and an ensuite bath/shower room. There were complimentary teas of every description and a cafetiere for fresh coffee. We had pre dinner drinks and then experienced a wonderful three course dinner; the cod was cooked to perfection. The choice excellent and the cheese slate wonderful. Highly recommended. "
