The Experience
There’s room to spread out in this three-storey Georgian house of Portland stone in a quiet and friendly street. An open-plan kitchen/dining/sitting room has a lovely open fire and plenty of comfy seating. You’ll find everything you need in the kitchen along with basics for cooking and the fire is all laid up for you to light.
The interior has the original Georgian stonework and carpentry but there are clever contemporary touches and bathrooms. French doors from the kitchen open out to a south-west-facing courtyard with a table and barbecue for relaxed evenings watching the sun go down while you sizzle supper. Bedrooms are peaceful and the master has sea views and an en-suite shower room.
The corniche road along the Jurassic Coast towards Lyme Regis is truly spectacular between the sea and towering chalk cliffs. Set out to Portland’s seafood restaurants, lounge on Chesil beach, hike the coastal path, hire a windsurfer or walk to the park for tennis.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're right at the start of the 18-mile stretch of Chesil Beach and in the oldest inhabited village on the Isle of Portland. Explore all of West Dorset and the Jurassic Coast: it's a 40-minute drive to Lyme Regis, Bridport and Lulworth. Shops and places to eat are a short walk, with Quiddles on the promenade and the Crab House seafood restaurant highly recommended.
Local points of interest from Jane McGregor
- For sport lovers we have the National Sailing Academy on the doorstep - there is wind and kite surfing, sailing lessons, dinghy and yacht hire. Just a few minutes walk away is an indoor swimming and diving pool, badminton and tennis courts and gym.
- The sky’s the limit for outdoor pursuits on the island, with fishing, birdwatching, horse riding, kayaking, cycling, rock-pooling, fossil-hunting, sea bathing and bracing coastal walks.
- It’s an easy drive to Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Lulworth - or head to bustling Bridport for a bargain at the bric-a-brac and antiques market on a Saturday morning.
- There is culture too - with National Trust houses, Hardy’s cottage and Portland castle nearby - we even have an open air cinema in the grounds of the island’s Pennysylvania castle in the summer.
- The island is rich in history - visit the D-day museum at Castletown- a fabulous hands on experience for enthusiasts and children alike, the Prison museum and cafe and the local history museum, complete with ammonites and dinosaur footprints
- Excellent restaurants and pubs just a walk away: our favourites include The Crab house Cafe and the Cove House Inn. Or walk to Billie Winters along the beach for Soul Food and fab cocktails and watch the windsurfers.

Introducing
Jane McGregor
The owners of Stonehall and Stonemason's House have holidayed in Portland since their children were small, returning every year for the light and the rolling seas. Though they live in London, the family is hands-on – Jane considers herself a custodian of the buildings, and ploughs love and detail into every corner.
