The Experience

Perfect Evershot and rolling countryside lie at the door of this 400-year-old gem in Thomas Hardy country. Natalie and Richard took the reins to revive its fortunes, with head chef Robert Ndungu cooking hearty food. It’s very much a traditional inn; locals sup pints of Otter Ale in the long flagstoned bar and guests sample good food sourced within 25 miles. In the dining room, the atmosphere changes to rural country house with smartly laid tables, terracotta tiles, soft lighting and elegant fireplaces. Good gastropub fare is taken seriously, be it a homemade burger, or open lasagne of confit rabbit followed by twice cooked pork belly, and a warm sticky toffee pudding. Little ones have their own menu, and stacks of colouring books and crayons to keep them busy while they wait. Service is helpful and friendly. Bedrooms creak with age and style; there are antiques and fabric wall-coverings, super little bathrooms, perhaps a wonky floor or a lovely four-poster. It’s worth splashing out on a larger room if you want space.

Reviews

We couldn’t have chosen a better place to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. The staff are so welcoming and made us feel very special. Our room was charming, the meals in the comfortable dining room were delicious and the lounge was a welcome refuge on a rainy morning. We highly recommend the Acorn Inn.

We thoroughly recommend this inn as a great place for a break, particularly in current times. We would highlight the quality of the food, the confortahbe bedrooms, the lounge for residents, but above all what makes it special is the welcome from the staff. This is a very well managed place and a real pleasure to visit.

We stayed here for three nights and recommend the Inn very highly. Our room was very comfortable with excellent amenities. The staff were always attentive, helpful and cheerful. We will return.

Martin, Kendal

After a cold and (very) wet day, dinner at the Acorn Inn was just the warm blanket I very much needed! The lasagna with rabbit and leeks was one of the best starters I ever had! The local cheeses delicious and severed at the right temperature, well done. Staff were very friendly and professional. Prefect evening!

Ralph, Amersfoort

My husband, Bulldog Boris & I had a wonderful stay here. The welcome was amazing. All of the staff were really helpful & the hospitality was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff even realised I must be gluten free & they asked & provided gluten free bread etc. I was so impressed, our whole stay was faultless. We will most definitely be back & I would highly recommend.

A beautiful and very ancient inn which exudes warmth and hospitality. I cannot speak highly enough of the Acorn Inn, its staff, the accommodation and the food. Everyone - from Reception, bar staff, and cleaning staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly and all went out of their way to ensure that I was looked after. My room was beautiful, with a four poster bed and views to the front, overlooking Fore Street. I had a wonderful evening meal and a delicious breakfast. I will be back!
