Ancient willow trees cast shade over stretches of lawn as kingfishers flit from branch to branch. A secret paradise unfurls before you, as through the Mill’s gardens the Stour and its tributaries flow, their banks a-shimmer with hostas, irises, day lilies, gunneras and ferns. Find privacy and independence in your own comfortably contemporary bolthole above the detached garage; a chandelier sparkles in the sun, a mini kitchen hides behind louvre doors, and relaxed Caroline brings you a fine continental breakfast. Walk across the water meadows to little Spetisbury for a pint; discover the delights of Brownsea Island and Blandford Forum.

We just enjoyed a seven-night stay at this wonderful hideaway which was so peaceful with lovely surroundings. The Old Mill was everything we had hoped for from the warm welcome on our arrival to the outside private seating area and the comfortable, spacious interior. We were lucky enough to glimpse a Kingfisher and two young otters at play during our stay. We highly recommend The Old Mill B&B to anyone wanting to stay in this delightful part of Dorset.

Local points of interest from Caroline Ivay

  • The wildlife visiting our grounds is both diverse and captivating. 77 varieties of birds have been noted to visit the garden and river. See kingfishers, egrets, herons, swans, moorhens and cormorants. Keep an eye out for the occasional otter.
  • Mentioned in the Domesday Book, there has been a water mill nestling close to the river here for centuries. Our grounds boast an enthralling variety and abundance of flora; the gardens have been designated a Site of nature Conservation Interest (SNCI)
  • Poole harbour and the ferry port are 20 minutes drive away. Close by are the sandy beaches at Canford Cliffs, Sandbanks and Bournemouth. Take the chain ferry to Studland Nature Reserve , walk or relax on the long stretch of sandy beach at Studland Bay
