The Experience

Romantics who love the sea need look no further. Welcome to a unique, private, cliff-top estate which began as a tented military camp in 1909. Annexed to what was the old Post Office is your own little ‘billet doux’, with garden. Walk straight into a pretty kitchen with duck-egg blue cupboards and wooden worktops and a hand-carved French dresser filled with china. The cream-carpeted living room opens onto the private garden and is bright and airy – sun streams in through French windows with beautiful crewel-work curtains. On the walls hang original art; the owner is a sculptor and runs stone carving courses you can book onto, check the SeaSculpt website for dates. The bedroom is cool and sleek, painted in soft greens with a fashionably-distressed wardrobe and a chest of drawers, and views over the sunny patio (complete with barbecue). There’s a fabulous big shower, with a heated floor, low level lighting, plump towels and fragrant things. A few steps and you are already on the coastal path with access to the beach. Walks are spectacular but you’re near to Swanage town for retail therapy.

We had a superb week at this fabulous cottage, which is very well equipped and comfortable and in a superb location. It is very quiet but easy walking distance to the beach and Swanage town. Jude gave us a warm welcome and even gave me some thyme from her garden as I had forgotten to buy some for our meal that evening. We absolutely loved Swanage and the area around, both countryside and coast.

A delightful hideaway in a private estate just a couple of blocks from the cliffs and benches to have an evening wine and cheese as the sun sets. Lovely to have breakfast in the private garden and so much of Dorset's scenic beauty right at hand. Even had a medical emergency requiring ambulance service - and neighbours jumped to aid and direct help to our side. Perfect base for a quiet retreat.

Just returned from a week's stay in the Billet Doux. A wonderful week of peace, quiet and relaxation plus lots of walking (despite severe weather!). The Billet Doux is very well equipped and extremely comfortable, a pleasure to return to after a day out. We did not want to leave! We would highly recommend this self-catering cottage.
