Peaceful village and a relaxed home full of art and antiques. Inviting, pretty bedroom and your own cosy sitting room. Friendly host too

Hills and meadows surround this lovely old rectory on the river Frome. Guests have an inviting suite on the first floor, independent from the happy hub of family life. A friendly home, and Nessie is a foodie too - you arrive to a home-baked something with tea, and breakfast comes with homemade bread, granola and jams, garden raspberries or gingery rhubarb perhaps. The elegant dining room is charming with antiques, candles, family photos. Bridport is a short drive: independent shops and a great Saturday market; Dorchester, for Hardy fans, is nearby too. Summer fields brim with wild flowers; walk to a pub in Cattistock for supper.

  • There's a beautiful 12th century church next door with an ancient Cedar tree in the church yard which is reported to be healing - it certainly gives you an air of calm and tranquility! The garden and grounds offer many peaceful spots to hide away.
  • We are 15 minutes from Bridport, West Bay and Burton Bradstock which have glorious walks along the Jurassic Coast. Why not walk from Charmouth to Seatown and have lunch at The Anchor Pub, taking in Golden Cap! On a good day it can't get more special
  • There are lots of gourmet pubs and restaurants nearby including Hix in Lyme Regis (40 mins), Summer Lodge (10 mins), The Seaside Boarding House (20 mins), Fox and Hounds in Cattistock (2 mins), The Crab Shack in Weymouth (25min) to name a very few!
  • Glorious walks and Bike Rides straight from the house, including The Frome Trail along the River Frome, a walk up the Ilchester Estate valley and masses of bicycle rides. You don't need to get into a car to find a glorious walk, if you don't want to!
  • Dorchester is only 20 minutes away for Thomas Hardy fans and Lulworth Cove, Corfe Castle are within an hours drive. There is a river near the house for fun swimming (an idyllic spot for picnics!}
  • A new level cycle path has opened nearby to Bridport along the old Uploaders railway line. Electric bikes for hire if you want to take it easy! This is a great family bike ride in stunning countryside all the way to the Jurassic Coast

"We had the warmest welcome and made to feel at home straight away. Nessie and David could not have been more accommodating and making their home feel like our home. Jemima kept us topped up with her gorgeous homemade biscuits and William made my son feel very welcome. Beautiful tranquil surroundings and gardens to relax in. Nothing was too much trouble for Nessie and breakfasts were amazing. Unfortunately we couldn't take the dogs back with us, so we will have to return for another adventure. "

" We were welcomed by 2 happy dogs and the warmest smile imaginable. Nessie is a natural hostess; the whole family seemed to genuinely enjoy our presence. You can stay in a wonderful place but if you don't feel welcomed, the experience is marred. Here, the atmosphere and the place were superb. Peaceful, wonderfully comfortable beds, private (a separate wing of the house). Delicious breakfasts. We'll explore more next time; we know the area is beautiful. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a medical crisis and Nessie could not have been kinder. I was very touched by her friendship"

"Although the weather was rather autumnal for the last weekend of July, I really enjoyed my stay at the Old Rectory. Having your own little wing of the house gives a lovely feeling of privacy, especially when spending a rainy afternoon in bed reading a good book ... or in my case sleeping :-) Vanessa was away on holiday but housekeeper June and her husband David were an excellent substitute, providing delicious breakfasts and force feeding me ice cream, cake and rather suspicious looking and tasting Danish candy. When you visit, do have dinner at the Acorn Inn at Evershot, it's worth the drive!"

"The perfect place for 2 escaping mums to meet, walk, relax and unwind. Nessie was incredibly attentive with our booking and during our stay in her beautiful home. The countryside is unspeakably beautiful and very convenient for the glorious Jurrasic coast. A short walk to the neighbouring village pub for a well earned pint and evening meal. Now back to reality......"

"We had a fabulous few days, en famille, at The Old Rectory. Such a beautiful house, idyllic setting and a wonderful welcome. Nessie and her family went over and above on everything for us. All her meals were homemade and delicious. Our 4 year old daughter struggled to understand the concept of a B&B and thought she could wonder into any room - every time she did thisNessie welcomed her with a warm smile and a slice of cake!! We highly recommend The Old Rectory and we will definitely be returning for another recce of Dorset! "

"Needs to stay in the area for a friends party and found this lovely family home. A beautiful house set in lovely grounds. 'So country'..... dogs, walks, home cooked food, breakfast really was lovely. I was expecting a bedroom but it's a suite! It's totally self contained within the house with bathroom and sitting room. Such a homely place and Nessie looked after us so well. Thank you and we hope to come back now we know you're there! Perhaps in the summer when we can use the tennis court and swim in the river which sounded lovely.... in summer perhaps!!"

"Our girls night away started with the warmest of welcomes, a steaming pot of tea and warm scones! What a wonderful place and such warm and welcoming hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for Nessie. The suite was beautiful, comfortable and lots of lovely touches. I could have moved into the bathroom with it's fantastic shower and roll top bath. Nessie opened up her living room to us that evening..........huge feather filled sofas and a roaring fire. This was the perfect get away and I will be returning soon with my family! "

"We contacted The Rectory at very short notice and were so fortunate that they were able to accommodate us. Nessie was welcoming from initial contact and thoughtful throughout. The house and surrounding area is beautiful and tranquil. The suite is lovely and comfortable with a great shower. Nessie gave us some great recommendations and we had a lovely relaxing stay with our family. We really enjoyed dinner in their local pub."

"What a lovely place to stay with the most amazing hosts! Wish we could have stayed longer! We felt very privileged in our 'wing' with supplies for tea, coffee and biscuits of course! The bathroom was amazing, with a huge bath and very fancy shower too, incredibly comfy bed and cute little TV room to enjoy our tea and biscuits in. Our hosts were so friendly and we really felt like family in their home, little touches such as tea and scones on arrival, breakfast made especially with dietary requests and of course visits from the pets and visits to the newly born little of puppies wasn't bad!"

"What a wonderful stay! The warm welcome began long before our arrival at The Old Rectory with Nessie kindly providing us with local information, suggestions and even making bookings for us. We couldn't have been made to feel more at home and thoroughly enjoyed our weekend. This is a new venture for Nessie and David, but it is clear that they are very well suited to the luxury B&B world. Beyond their hospitality, the location is beautiful and tranquil, with some breathtaking views as you drive through the back roads. We ate so well, from Nessie's breakfasts to the variety of fine local eateries"
