A quirky little place with surfer-chic interiors, lovely staff and a happy buzz throughout. You’re on a residential street 500 metres from the beach; a short stroll leads down to the promenade which you can follow into town. Back at the hotel a relaxed informality reigns. You’ll find circular leather booths, driftwood lamps, a house guitar and surf boards hanging on the wall. There’s a bar for cocktails, candle lanterns scattered about, a table laden with cakes, then the daily papers and cool tunes in the air. Outside, a terrace for all seasons waits, with a roof that disappears when the sun shines and a fire pit for cooler nights. Bedrooms upstairs come in different sizes, but even the smaller rooms are lovely with warm colours, crisp linen and smart bathrooms. The beach waits at the end of the road, seven miles of sand with a surf shop on the way down. Urban Reef, Mark & Fiona’s sister restaurant, has a balcony and terrace overlooking the sea, not a bad spot for dinner in summer.
