The Experience

They don’t do things by halves at the Pier – a cool £1.5 million has recently been spent on a 21st-century makeover for this iconic coastal hotel. It sits on the harbourside with views of town and water, its front terrace a big draw in good weather. Inside, a cool new look captivates. A chic warehouse feel waits in the bar – stripped walls, hanging lamps, leather bar stools, big windows to frame the view. You get craft beers and cask ales, a gin library and prosecco cocktails, then small plates of Nordic design if you fancy a light bite. Hungry souls fly upstairs to the famous first-floor brasserie, where mirrored booths and leather banquettes now come as standard, and doors open onto a balcony, where you can tuck into your lobster Thermidor while gazing out onto the estuary. Bedrooms – some above, others next door in a former inn – have fancy bedheads, seaside colours, crisp white linen and super bathrooms; the suite, with its vast window, has a telescope with which to scan the high seas. Coastal walks and blue flag beaches wait, as does the Electric Palace, the second oldest cinema in Britain.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sue Bunting

  • Harwich is full of history. Did you know that the Master of the Mayflower, Christopher Jones lived and married (twice) in Harwich. Also the Ha'penny Pier, Redoubt Fort, High and Low Lighthouse, Wheelhouse Crane and much, much more!
  • Did you know that Dovercourt Bay is the proud owner of a Blue Flag beach award? Just a few minutes walk along the promenade from The Pier and a lovely walk watching all the boats and ships coming and going from Felixstowe.
  • Catch the foot ferry to Shotley and Felixstowe, open every day of the year from March to November (and then weekends if the weather permits) Ask about a private charter along the river Stour too
  • Harwich has festivals galore from the Harwich Society festival in June to the Sea Shanty Festival in October. You'll find more details on the Historic Harwich website,
  • Take in a film at the Electric Palace, the oldest cinema in the UK. 'Flicks and Chips' is a great thing to do anytime of year but especially in the winter. Check out the programme on the hotel website or sign up to the monthly newsletters
  • Go seal watching on the Walton Backwaters with the owners of the Harwich Foot Ferry. Seals are guaranteed or you'll get your money back. Really popular so make sure you book through the hotel
