Simple, old-fashioned and cosy with glorious views, and walks from the door to pubs and pristine woodland... balm for a city-dweller’s soul

High on a clearing above the ancient woodland of the Chalford Valley is this 200-year old farmstead. The views are splendid in any weather and the wildlife is abundant (the owner's have won awards for their conservation!). Cockshutt Cottage sits beside the drive, a short step from the farm: an old stone cattle shed that has been lovingly restored by the energetic Usborne family. You walk in to a cosy kitchen-diner with living room and small stone fireplace beyond; there are light and views on all sides, and possibly a donkey peering at you across the garden wall. (This is Chalford, home of the Chalford Donkey Project.) Flagstones shine, woodwork is polished or painted, and marble worktops, well-worn sofas and appliances shun modernity. Simple country bedrooms and bathroom are light and traditional. You are close to so much here, yet feel blissfully tucked away. Stroll down to the canal, look for rare orchids, watch buzzards soar high above; only the whistle of the occasional steam train disturbs the peace. This is the sort of place Laurie Lee would have felt completely at home in. Dogs are welcome, too.

Local points of interest from
Hege Usborne:

  • There is a huge choice of places to eat and drink locally, several in walking distance, ranging from artisan bakers, organic cafes, and local pubs to fine dining and gastro pubs. Local produce features strongly in most, and many are dog friendly too.
  • Every Saturday, the side streets of Stroud are filled with stalls for the award winning Farmers' Market, one of the the biggest, busiest and most popular in the UK. Meet the local characters among organic foods and flowers, artisan bakers and local potters
  • Our award winning work with the local wildlife trusts includes conservation volunteer days to improve habitats for dormice, bats and butterflies through the winter. Consequently, in the summer you may see all kinds of rare insects and butterflies
  • The Arts & Crafts movement was strong in the area at the beginning of the C20th leaving a noticable artistic legacy of studios and workshops in the five valleys. Stroud and Cirencester have Art centres selling their wares. Open Studios in June
  • Westley Farm is managed more like a nature reserve than a commercial farm. The lack of pesticides and fertiliser allows wildlife and flowers to flourish. Bunnies, badgers, butterflies, buzzards and more abound. Explore the countryside from your doorstep
  • Our passions include history and ancient buildings. We are lucky to have five Saxon/early Norman churches nearby. There are also great walks by Neolithic long barrows or Iron Age hill forts. We have written about our favourites in the cottage info folder.
