The Experience

In a hamlet of historic houses is Garden Cottage: spotless, spacious and full of special things. Take lunch in the garden on a warm day; stuff the burner with logs on a wintery one.

Down a grand hall lined with portraits and gilded chairs are a big kitchen-dining room, a sitting room, a conservatory, and a sofa’d study with books and TV. Everything is traditional, delightful, and ample (including the butler’s pantry). Bedrooms – the ensuite downstairs, the others up – are a treat to come home to.

For pubs, shops and a great butcher, hop in the car to desirable riverside Lechlade. From here, there are circular paths and trails to please walkers and dogs. For fresher-than-fresh lunches, head for Daylesford, the first farm shop in England (20 miles); then Barnsley House for afternoon tea. As for Oxford, it’s 30 minutes. Find new art at the old Ashmolean, punts on the Cherwell, and champagne at The Anchor in bohemian Jericho.

Reviews

Such a very English cottage, garden and village. And a short hop to Lechlade for the start of lots of walks, history, archaeology, the canal and the river. Lovely to have adventures from here and return to such a comfortable, effortlessly glamorous place to stay.

Location

The neighbourhood

Little Farringdon's attractive houses stretch 500 yards along a minor road. Your cottage is close to a 12th-century church, and to Thyme Cookery School where day courses are held. Lechlade, 1 mile, has great food shops; Upton Smokery Farm is 8 miles. The characterful Bell Inn at Langford does very good food and is a 6-minute drive. Beautiful Burford - best out of season - is 15 minutes away.
