Horse and Groom

Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire

A great little Cotswold base with a happy vibe and pretty orchard garden, lovely rooms, lots of style and delicious food

A lovely pub, now in the capable hands of Cirrus Inns, serving up excellent food and home-brewed ale. It stands at the top of the hill with big views stretching over the Cotswolds. Outside, you can sit in the shade of damson trees and watch chefs gather carrots from the kitchen garden and berries from the fruit cage. Inside, open fires lure you to the generous bar with its glorious marble top and gleaming ranks of bottles. Locals love it: they come for the craic, a pint of home-brewed ale and some deliciously local food, perhaps whole roast mallard with celeriac purée, sautéed spinach and dauphinoise potatoes followed by apple and rhubarb flapjack crumble. Uncluttered bedrooms have a contemporary country-house style: crisp linen, good art, smart fabrics, sparkling bathrooms. None are small, three are big, the garden room opens onto the terrace, those at the front are soundproofed to minimise noise from the road. Breakfast is your final feast: Tamworth sausages, smoked haddock, freshly squeezed orange juice, breads and jams and Jersey butter. A real treat.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Fiona Moucq

  • The Horse and Groom is the perfect launch pad for all things Cotswold - Chipping Campden, Broadway, Stow on the Wold, Daylesford, the Swells and the Slaughters are all within easy reach.
  • Take in the stunning display of birds of prey at Cotswold Falconry Centre, here in the village. If you're really lucky you might even get to handle one of the birds!
  • A stroll around Batsford Arboretum is breathtaking at any time of year - from the first buds of spring to the dazzling hues of autumn it is well worth a visit.
  • In 20 minutes you can cross the border and swap to Shakespeare's County. Enjoy a play at one of the RSC theatres or visit the home of the bard himself.
  • National Trust aficionados are spoiled with Hidcote, Kiftsgate, Snowshill, Chastleton and more all situated locally.
  • And after a day of jousting at Warwick Castle (35 mins) you can come back to the bar for a pint of home-brewed ale!
