Beautiful hotels have a style all of their own and this chic townhouse is no exception. Outside, its Georgian façade overlooks Imperial Gardens and comes with towering Corinthian columns. Inside, striking interiors mix old and new to great effect. You get high windows, stripped floors, chandeliers and ceiling friezes, then an exciting collection of contemporary art that’s conquered every wall. Fat sofas wait in front of smouldering fires, you find blue leather bar stools, vast yellow armchairs, old wooden fridges piled high with hams and cheese. Downstairs, there’s a pool table, then a popular bar that turns into a terrace in summer thanks to a retractable roof. Indulging rooms have big beds, the best linen, piles of art books, robes and big walk-in showers in flawless bathrooms; some have a bath in the room, too. Great food waits in the restaurant, perhaps devilled crab on toast, slow cooked lamb with salsa verde, treacle tart with clotted cream. In summer, life spills onto the terrace for afternoon tea. A small spa is coming for summer 2017. Don’t miss the jazz festival in May.
