The Old Stocks Inn

Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire

Stylish inn, recently refurbished, with a terace for summer, a cute bar for local ales and some beautiful rooms with fancy bathrooms

16 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 - 4

Stow, a pretty market town, is nicely positioned for exploring the Cotswolds, with Stratford to the North, Cheltenham to the west, Oxford and Blenheim Palace to the east and the early stretches of the Thames to the south. As for this 17th-century inn, it’s just been refurbished from top to toe. It sits on the market square with golden stone walls inside and out. Interiors mix original beams and timber frames with a big dollop of contemporary style – leather banquettes and hanging lamps in the stylish restaurant; panelled walls and an open fire in the cool little bar; a pretty coffee shop that overlooks the square. In summer, you spin onto a beautiful terrace for wood-fired pizzas in the sun. Super-comfy beds in beautiful rooms are wrapped in the crispest linen. You get coffee machines, iPod docks, Bakelite telephones, old Penguin books. All have chic bathrooms, some with claw-foot baths (a couple in the room). Three are dog-friendly, the family suite has bunk beds and an Xbox. Good food waits downstairs, perhaps cured salmon, a chargrilled steak, then lemon and lime mousse.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Jim Cockell

  • The Little Stocks Coffee shop is the perfect place to people watch across the market square with great tea, coffee and amazing home made cakes.
  • During the summer months we have a beautiful patio at the back of the Inn with its own wood burning pizza oven, alfresco drinks and seasonal toppings. All you need is a bit of sun!
  • The Old Stocks Inn itself is named after one of Stow’s most famous landmarks: the original penal stocks that stand on the green right outside our front door. An unmissable photo opportunity!
  • A few miles from Daylesford Organic Farm and Spa, the best place to pick up bits for a little picnic in the Cotswolds. They have won over 60 national and international awards over the last 3 years for delicious food and farm produce.
  • The highest town in the Cotswolds, Stow sits at a crossroads on top of an 800-foot hill – a rather breezy location that inspired the 18th-century couplet “Stow on the Wold, where the wind blows cold”, which is etched on the walls of St Edward’s Hall.
  • Stow captures the imagination of anyone with a passion for history. There’s something to be discovered at every turn, from England’s oldest inn on Digbeth Street, to the 15th-century ‘Crooked House’ that stands on the west side of Market Square.
