Down the one-mile lane, left over the cattle grid and onto an unmarked track – keep going! The owners’ white farmhouse and the lovely cottages soon pop into view. The position is special and the bird life is extraordinary – so much so that Peter Scott set up Slimbridge on the other side of the water. This well-insulated home is a single-storey outbuilding divided into two wood-clad cottages, and inside has a charming simplicity. Step into a living room with a creamy sofa and armchair, a dining table, a cosy wood-burner and a TV; there are river views, too. To the side is a galley kitchen, brand new and nicely equipped; the white bathroom and separate wet room are simple but appealing. Expect cream bedspreads, white cotton, old pine, fresh paintwork and toasty terracotta floors. To the front are two grassed areas divided by a willow screen and a lovely old orchard; skirt around the Cowans’ house and you reach the river beyond. Wonderful walks start from the door, you can visit the ancient village of Awre, and cycle in the nearby Forest of Dean. Come for the peace of it all – and the birds.
