The Experience

The cottage was once home to one of the canal lock keepers. The canal was used in the 17th-century for transporting goods to Southampton and bringing coal for the Bishop’s Palace and Winchester cathedral. The kitchen is surprisingly big and well kitted out: you’ll find basics in the cupboard (just replace what you finish) and welcome biscuits. Eat in the roomy dining room then relax in the sitting room with an open fire for chilly nights.

The dining room door opens onto a sheltered south-west-facing terrace with another big table. There’s a barbecue to use and also a parasol and deckchairs. Wander up the road to the The Black Boy pub or its sister restaurant The Black Rat which has a Michelin star. Upstairs there are three good-sized bedrooms and a single with a cot – a family will be very comfortable here and there are books, toys and games.

Children will borrow the blow-up dinghy (life jackets provided) and head for watery fun by the playing fields.

Canalside Cottage is a gem of a place to stay! It is set in a gorgeous, peaceful location beside the river, yet the beautiful city of Winchester is only 10 minutes walk away. Plus there are lovely countryside walks close by. The accommodation is perfect and so well equipped. We had three nights at the cottage for our wedding anniversary and a return visit for us, at sometime, is a must!

Veronica, Reigate

We had a fabulous family holiday here with our 3 young children. We loved the combination of being in a picturesque location right beside the peaceful canal and then it being only a short 10 minute stroll into the city centre. The cottage had everything we needed; comfortable bedrooms, cosy lounge and lovely kitchen/dinner where we ate together and played games round the table. We would definitely love to return.

Charlotte, Surrey

We had an absolutely wonderful stay in the cottage. A perfect place to relax in front of the fire and enjoy long-lasting dinners around the table. Would recommend to absolutely anyone. Thank you!

Sophie, London

A perfect spot on the river - thank you. Our children felt at home immediately and your cottage is beautiful.

The Chesover Family

What a relaxing 'Wind in the Willows' hideaway, enchanting! And well-equipped! Such a welcoming place to spend time with friends. Slept like a log!

My friends and I enjoyed the most lovely Bank Holiday weekend at Winchester Canalside Cottage. Sophie was a brilliant host from start to finish - from sending us information about the cottage and local area in advance, to checking we'd arrived safely as trains were up the spout. Here you'll have everything you need including kitchen/bathroom supplies, all kitchen appliances and gorgeously soft linen and towels. The cottage and setting are as beautiful as the photographs. Next time I hope for more sunshine so I can take the dingy out for a paddle and fire up the BBQ!

Debbie, London

A charming, family-friendly cottage by the canal with a lovely quiet feel yet just a short walk to Winchester for market, pubs, shops and restaurants. Lovely walks along the river or across open playing fields.

The Farmers' Market on Saturday has independent food stalls and The Hoxton Bakehouse on Jewry Street is excellent. Visit the cathedral and take lovely walks along the canal and through the water meadows to St Catherine's Hill for the maze and good picnic spot.

Sophie Hiddleston

Sophie and her husband have owned the house for a long time but they now live in London because of their work. They have young children so they've kitted out the house with everything families might need. They regularly come back here themselves and particularly enjoy being by the water and all the wonderful walks on the doorstep, either along the river or into town.
