The Experience

The first sight is, quite simply, stunning. Down the sweeping drive to a long, low, listed house with intricate brickwork and latticed windows, embraced by five acres of land.

Step in to the smell of polish, log fires and scented candles. Imagine wooden floors and warm textiles, books, toys, games and tricycles, an abundance of fluffy towels, 12 sets of wellies, and a vast hamper of good things. Book an escorted bike ride through the New Forest, or spend the day in Winchester (28 miles).

Lymington, with its marinas and Saturday market, is two miles; have brunch on the terrace of The Haven and watch the ferries roll by. Then race home, to the stunning heated pool and outdoor kitchen. Four sumptuous bedrooms wait upstairs, with a woody dormitory under the roof, and an exquisite shepherd’s hut at the end of the garden. Keen cooks will flock to the kitchen… for treats you can summon a French chef.

Reviews

Tom and Juliet are marketing Durns as a private hotel experience in a self catering setting and that is exactly what they have achieved. I have never seen a place with such attention to detail and such complete yet unpretentious luxury. Naturally the bedrooms and gardens are sublime, but the carefully thought out extras are unparalleled. Durns is simply breathtaking.

Location

The neighbourhood

Down the quiet lane are a farm shop and a friendly food pub with a garden, The Red Lion. At the back of the house is the (barely audible) main road; on the other side is the New Forest (12 mountains bikes are provided). Lovely Lymington is close for everything, including the Monkey Brewhouse. Make a bee-line for the Beaulieu Motor Museum, dine grandly at Chewton Glen (8 miles).

Introducing

Tom & Juliet Chamberlain

Business partners Tom and Juliet devoted 2021 to restoring this, a labour of love, their new self-catering acquisition. The service is second to none, with Tom's sister Hannah, who lives nearby, organising anything and everything. All is within their remit: power boats, paddle boards, personal trainers, nannies, cooks, babysitters and spa treatments on site. For families it's heaven.
