No 5 Bridge Street

The spruced-up old Winchester boozer has become a cool contemporary dining pub and boutiquey hotel - with bright modern menus to match

Rooms sleep 2

In a great spot, close to the river Itchen and a stroll from the cathedral, is a new Winchester acquisition for the team behind the White Star Tavern, Southampton. This once failing boozer, standing beside a busy access road, has been transformed into an informal dining pub with rooms. It attracts local workers for breakfast and serves classic British food from its open kitchen in a buzzy, canteen-style dining area. Doors open onto a secluded courtyard for summer dining, peacefully away from city hubbub. Tuck into crayfish and lemon mayonnaise sandwiches or tapas-style fried squid, or something more substantial such as pork belly with watercress champ and cider gravy. In the airy bar, all wooden floors, cushioned benches and mellow creams and greys, head for the cosy front snug for a pint of local Bowman by the fire. The contemporary feel extends upstairs to six stylishly simple guest bedrooms. Expect crisp linen and blanket throws on comfy double beds, the odd statement wallpaper and feature fireplace, a few designer touches, and fresh white bathrooms with big walk-in rain showers.
