On the handsome Cadland Estate, you follow the road until, all of a sudden, the view opens to bobbing boats and open sky. This seaside retreat five miles from the main house is blessed with an estuary setting; the creek is yards in front of you and the Jolly Sailor is a hop across the grass, super for a pint or a supper. There’s only one entrance to the cottage yet it began as two; note the (narrow) staircases at either end. You have two sitting rooms linked by a cream-painted kitchen-diner, and a tasteful bunk room for kids with a shower. Upstairs, large, cossetting, frill-free doubles (one with a small bedroom off it) share a brand-new bathroom. Thanks to a cot, a highchair, fishing nets, toys and a quarter-acre garden, the set-up is ideal for families. As for the decor, it’s elegantly done with no expense spared, from the beautifully lined bedroom curtains to the gorgeous velvet sofa in the kids’ sitting room. Curl up by the wood-burner… all you’ll hear are birds and the odd fog horn. Stay the week and you’re treated to a hamper of estate produce: milk, eggs, bacon, honey, butter, and excellent sourdough bread.
