The Experience

The house does look grand but you’ll simply feel like you’ve gone to stay with friends for the weekend. Alastair is blessed with huge generosity of spirit and gives you proper afternoon tea with scones and cakes and offers of lifts hither and thither – he and Mary just want you to have a happy time.Breakfast is round the huge kitchen table and, if you’re hiking that day, will set you up. You get freshly laid eggs from their own hens when they’re behaving. The setting is gorgeous: the garden with its sweeping lawns is surrounded by a 50-acre oak wood (a swathe of daffodils in spring) within the 700-acre estate. You can walk straight onto the South Downs Way.Just down the road, you’ll find the award-winning Flower Pots Inn and their microbrewery (if you don’t want to walk back the local ex-postman runs a taxi service), the attractive village of Alresford (four miles) has plenty of bijou shops, restaurants and another good pub, The Bell. Back at the house there may be a wee dram waiting for you in the guest sitting room and a short walk upstairs to a very comfortable bed.

Reviews

Stayed 3 nights but would happily have moved in permanently. Alistair and Mary made us to feel like friends visiting rather than paying guests. The house, accommodation, gardens and surrounding woods are beautiful beyond description. A holiday in itself.

Peter and Eileen, Stockport, Cheshire

A truly lovely place to stay. Relaxing, comfortable with really lovely, friendly hosts. And set in beautiful woodlands with walks and nearby pubs to enjoy. A gem!

Location

The neighbourhood

From the pretty garden you can roam the woods, walk to the brewery or join the South Downs Way – a hundred miles of bridleways and trails meandering through gentle English countryside, described by Virginia Woolf as “too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look”. Winchester is seven miles for visiting the cathedral and good places to eat and shop in The Square, including The Hambledon – a beautiful mini-department store of lovely things. If you like opera The Grange Festival takes place each summer at the neo-classical mansion eight miles away.

Local points of interest from Mary & Alastair Gossage

  • The beautiful town of Alresford is well worth visiting with excellent pubs, cafes, restaurants, boutiques, varied independent shops and several delis for your picnic lunch.
  • There are many good independent pubs nearby offering good food. The award winning Flower Pots pub, with its own brewery, is close; a mecca for real ale enthusiasts.
  • Hinton Ampner National Trust house and gardens is just half a mile away. Further afield is Longstock by the river test.
  • The historic town of Winchester, with many attractions, including a theatre and cinema is a short drive from us and the beautiful cathedral is well worth a visit.
  • Set within the South Downs national park there are numerous footpaths in the area, especially the South Downs Way and we are happy to collect you from your walk to bring you to Shorley Wood. Bicycling is popular.
  • The Grange Festival performing wonderful opera in a landscape setting is open during the summer months just beyond Alresford.

Introducing

Mary & Alastair Gossage

Mary was born and brought up in this house but has travelled extensively. She now runs a successful tableware company from a converted building by the house. She’s also a huge fan of Southampton Football Club. Alastair, now retired, is very much in charge in the kitchen and really enjoys having guests in the house, which they share with three dogs and two cats. About forty peacocks roam the garden.
