It’s an easy hop from London but surrounded by countryside. In the courtyard of the family home, the cottage is private, secluded and romantic. Retreat for box set marathons in the sitting room, with a sweep of oak floor warm underfoot; open barn doors to the dining room for sociable meals. There’s a great little kitchen and Maria leaves a big breakfast: croissants and jam, orange juice, bacon and eggs.
It’s up a steep ladder to a bed deck which older children will love, or upstairs to a cosy bedroom with pitched ceiling and a bath with rainfall shower for warming up after long strolls. The tiny garden is leafy and lovely.
Wander to charming Odiham across the fields, visit King John’s crumbling castle, head to Winchester for shops, markets and the soaring cathedral.
