The Experience

You’ll be entirely able to unbend here: find a pretty little table and chairs outside with pots of sweet herbs where you’ll sit with a sundowner or a morning cup of tea. Walk straight in to a light and bright open-plan space with a kitchen to one side. You’ll find all the basics in the cupboards plus a welcome hamper with local craft beer, jam, bread and lavender tea.

Choose a book (including all of Jane Austen’s works) or a DVD from a good selection and snuggle in when the weather isn’t friendly. Stock up at the monthly farmers’ market in Alton or in Four Marks (four miles), visit Hattingley Valley Wines for perfect sparkling wines and return to cook up a storm, or walk five minutes to the excellent village pub.

Bedrooms spoil with organic cotton sheets, large windows for pretty views over the garden and lane, and painted wooden panels to retain that barn-like feel. This is a paradise for walkers: The Writer’s Way passes the door and you can stroll all the way to the Jane Austen House Museum.

Reviews

The Hay Barn was a perfect location for exploring the local area. Susannah was very helpful and ensured we were comfortable. We enjoyed local visits to Jane Austen's house at Chawton and Gilbert White's house at Selborne, as well as going further afield to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Winchester. The Hay Barn had a well equipped kitchen, cosy bedrooms and is in a quiet location in the village; which we also enjoyed exploring.

Very enjoyable stay in Susannah's lovely barn. Comfortable and well-equipped, with great walking and wildlife on the doorstep. It was a treat to be able to walk in one direction to Chawton for Jane Austen's house, and in the other to Selborne for Gilbert White's house and the fantastic Jubilee Tap. A super place to stay in a lovely location!

Judith, Bath

We had a wonderful and relaxing stay at The Hay Barn in Farringdon. Susannah was very welcoming and the accommodation is beautifully furnished as well as practical, with everything that you might need for a short stay. The quiet village is surrounded by rolling chalk hills, with an extensive network of accessible footpaths and a great local pub just 5 mins walk away. There were also lots of nearby places (within 15mins drive) to keep the kids entertained. Highly recommended.

George, London

The Haybarn was spacious, bright and very well equipped. Susannah’s artist flair was reflected in the decor and soft furnishings. The barn is tucked away in an attractive village within walking distance of a good pub. There are many lovely walks within the immediate vicinity and lots of places of interest further afield. Susannah is an excellent host who strikes the right balance between being friendly and helpful but not intrusive. I would highly recommend the Haybarn as a comfortable bolthole.

John, Bury St Edmunds

The Haybarn is a charmingly furnished holiday cottage, very comfortable and well equipped, situated in a rural part of Hampshire. It is where you can just relax and enjoy peaceful surroundings or explore the nearby lanes and countryside where picturesque cottages abound.

Ruth, Guildford

Stylishly appointed with everything provided that you would need for your stay, the Hay Barn was both comfortable and functional. Susannah was welcoming and helpful. A number of National Trust properties accessible within a short drive as was Jane Austen's house and Chawton. And if that was not enough, a great pub with excellent food and real ale was a 10 minutes walk away. A really enjoyable stay.

Phil, Swansea

The Haybarn was classy, comfortable and scrupulously clean; and has a lovely open plan living space which was perfect for a family holiday. Susannah went above and beyond, providing all sorts of things we needed for our baby, and personal recommendations for places to eat. Very much enjoyed, we hope to stay again.

Returning to the county of my birth, here I discovered wonderful treasures I'd not known about. I arrived by train and walked everywhere, the pubs, Jane Austen's house and other delights. Susannah was a delightful host, providing a gorgeous hamper on arrival, and super helpful with details of local walks and our other needs. The barn is immaculate with everything you would want. Personally I felt it would have been lovely to have more original features inside the barn (only two original beams showing) but this was outweighed by the warmth of the host and her attention to detail. Thank you!

Phillipa, Briancon

We had a fantastic stay at Hay Barn as a family of 3. Everything worked well for us and our 4 year old, with a spare bed in the twin room for when he wanted some company. The kitchen feels brand new, with everything you need to make tasty dinners. The village is great to wander around, with lots of beautiful countryside around to explore. We spotted bats, a hare and plenty of tractors! The barn is set in a fantastic location to get out and do lots, whether youre up for an explore in Alice Holt woods, a trip back in time on the Watercress line steam trains, or just a mooch around town.

Anna, Coxley

The Hay Barn fully met our expectations, and more. Very comfortable, attractive decor and ambience, with plenty of space including for the harp we brought along. Susannah is the perfect host - her recommendations for places to eat, where to buy supplies etc, were excellent. Lovely countryside, some great walks, and the Jane Austen attractions so close. Would definitely stay there again.

Guy, London

Light, spacious and extremely comfortable the Hay Barn is also fully equipped with everything you need for your stay as well as many thoughtful extra items which made our stay a memorable one. It is very quiet & peaceful located in the small village of Farringdon but also a short dribe to shops and the many interesting interesting places to visit. Our host Susannah lives on site which is reassuring in the event of a problem but all we required were a few tips for walks from the Barn and places to eat nearby.

David, Ferndown

Our stay at the Hay Barn couldn't have been better - from the local treats waiting for us when we arrived to the warm welcome and words of advice from Susannah and her family. The Hay Barn was perfectly placed for lots of walks (straight from the front door!) and to see some of the local villages and Winchester. It was a real (re)treat. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Iona, London

We thoroughly enjoyed our bank holiday weekend stay at the Hay Barn. Susannah and Alex were very welcoming. The accommodation was very clean and well equipped. Comfortable beds and lovey bed linen were much appreciated. As were the little treats of local produce and the fantastic information folder with really helpful and useful information about local attractions including ideas and marked maps for the lovely easy countryside walks from the door. In fact the whole Meon valley is gorgeous. There is even an excellent pub in the village a short walk from the Barn. A real gem! Highly recommend!

Marianne, London

We had a wonderful five days at the Hay Barn. Spotlessly clean, very comfortable and beautifully furnished accommodation. Lovely country walks on the doorstep, including a walk over fields to Chawton House. Great village pub nearby. Susannah and Alex are very friendly and helpful, and the children loved meeting the resident guinea pigs! We would definitely return.

Claire, Maidenhead

The Haybarn is an immaculate cottage and spotlessly clean;very reassuring in these troubling times. Susannah was very welcoming and offered great ideas for walks and places to visit. Despite the fact that the barn is next door to her house she was careful to never to infringe on our privacy. There are lots of lovely walks literally from the front door and we also visited Hinton Ampner, Butser Ancient Farm and had a trip on the Watercress Stream train. The weather was terrible but we had a lovely time!

Joanne, Middlesex

This is a lovely place to stay - spotlessly clean, very well equipped, spacious and comfortable. The village is gorgeous and very peaceful, a great base for glorious walks a with lots of great places to visit. Info on the house and surrounding area detailed and clear. We found Susannah friendly and helpful but not intrusive.

Lisa, York

We've just spent 5 days at The Hay Barn. What a gem of a place. Perfectly located in a quintessentially English village with plenty of glorious countryside walks straight from the door and a fabulous pub a leisurely stroll away. The property is just what we had hoped for from from the listing - and more. Tastefully furnished. Well equipped. Susannah is an attentive and responsive host. It was the ideal place for a few days of rest and relaxation away from the city.

Rosie, London

What a lovely place we managed to find! The cottage was beautifully decorated and came with a surprise welcome pack which included a pint of milk, a loaf of bread, homemade jam and a bottle of locally produced beer. All of which were delightful. Inspired by the pack we visited the local brewery, I would recommend FFF’s Moonshine. All in all we found the stay to be a huge success and we really appreciated Susannah’s thoughtful touches :)

James, St. Albans

The Hay Barn was the ideal stay for our family of four (we have two little girls). The house is ideal for a short stay, clean, spacious and with all essential commodities you need. Lovely welcome gifts including locally produced jam and tea bags, bread and fresh milk. Susannah and Alex are very friendly hosts, although they live opposite you never feel you are being watched but they always check how your stay is and were very kind in showing our daughters how to feed the 3 guinea pigs they have, which our girls loved. The setting where the barn is located is ideal for country walks. Loved it

Davide, Beckenham

What really excites me about the Hay Barn is the chance to set off from the front door in the morning on fabulous walks through 'Jane Austen country' along the Writer's Way. It is a very pretty bolthole, with a brilliant pub minutes away on foot.

Local points of interest from Susannah Acland

  • Set on the edge of The South Downs National Park, on the "Writers Way" (a network of paths and bridleways linking Alton and the surrounding villages) the barn is an ideal base for walkers, with several beautiful walks straight from the front door.
  • The Hay Barn sits in the heart of Jane Austen country with the pretty village of Chawton a leisurely half hour walk away through woodland and open fields (or short drive), where the Jane Austen House Museum and Chawton House are located.
  • The 18th century naturalist, Gilbert White's Museum (and excellent cafe) in the beautiful village of Selborne, is a short drive away, where more beautiful walks can be found including the stunning "zig zag" path up to the top of Selborne Common.
  • The pretty market town of Alresford is a 20 min drive away and for opera fans, we are ideally located for the Grange Festival. The Alresford Watercress Festival takes place in May and the historic Watercress line runs steam train trips to and from Alton.
  • Just 10 minutes further down the road is historic Winchester with its beautiful cathedral and a plethora of independent shops.
  • Upper Farringdon is a beautiful village, with its ancient church (and Yew Tree which is one of 20 of the oldest in the UK), thatched cottages and our excellent pub, The Rose and Crown which serves delicious food and has a pretty and spacious beer garden.

Susannah Acland

Susannah is an artist and interior designer, her husband a very keen gardener. They have two girls and together they enjoy setting off on foot (with their dog) to discover the natural and architectural treasures of this beautiful slice of the UK. They really enjoy having guests and hope that you'll fall in love with the countryside as much as they have.
