A big house in a small village in the middle of the New Forest – lovely gardens run down to woodland, the odd deer comes in to nibble the roses. Inside, country-house interiors have a distinctly contemporary feel – airy and nicely stylish with wood floors, pretty wallpapers and a relaxed feel. You’ll find smart sofas in the sitting room, then a chic bar with a wall of glass that opens onto the terrace, perfect for afternoon tea in the sun. Bedrooms are lovely. They come in different shapes and sizes, but all have the same comforts: excellent beds, crisp linen, warm colours, sparkling bathrooms. Three are dog-friendly, those in the eaves are warmly cosy, larger rooms have armchairs, most have garden views. The big surprise is the delicious food, so work up an appetite in the forest by day, then come home for a feast, perhaps scallops with curried cauliflower, local venison in a port sauce, Bakewell tart with blackberry jam. There are simpler dishes, too: posh fish and chips, pork belly with buttered greens, beetroot tarte tatin. Fabulous walking, mountain bike trails and sun loungers in the garden wait.
