Relaxed, colourful farmhouse with friendly hosts and lovely rambling garden. Beautifully rural - sheep, pasture, chickens, forest and sky…

This 16th-century farmhouse is bursting with books, art and treasures that speak of worlds far beyond the tiny hamlet. Festooned with roses in summer, wood-burner warmed in winter. Inviting bedrooms, up steep oak stairs, have handmade beds from India - the high, pretty four-poster has a footstool for climbing in. Wake for an Aga breakfast round the kitchen table: a full English with eggs from the hens. Merbach Trig Point has views over seven counties and is walkable from the door; Hay-on-Wye is close; there's a small lake in the eight acres of pasture - Emma is happy for you to paddle about in the rowing boat when the sun is out.

  • Family farmhouse in the Golden Valley under 10 mins from Hay, the vallee d'or as the French invaders called it - the stream is the Dore ! Outstanding distant views across Wye valley to Radnor Hills, with ancient tump here, formerly a Norman border castle
  • From here local village is Dorstone; walkable, fascinating neolithic burial chamber on same ridge as trig point. At Bredwardine is perfect river beach for swimming in the Wye below first stone bridge in Herefordshire. Easy access to explore Black Mountains
  • Hay on Wye, our biggest draw with its medieval castle, world famous second hand bookshops, numerous independent shops (no chains here!): antiques, galleries, vintage, boutiques, outdoor/camping, Shepherds ice cream parlour, cafes, Booths cinema inc NT live
  • Adventures include walking the numerous local footpaths (Offas Dyke, Wye Valley Walk, Herefordshire Trail); riding/treking the hills; canoeing on the Wye; biking (guests have stayed en route with toothbrush in their paniers !); gliding in Black Mountains
  • Peaceful pursuits, apart from Hay, to drive up Hay Bluff over Gospel Pass & down to Llantony ruined abbey; beautiful drive up Wye to Builth Wells; cathedral town of Brecon & its Beacons; the restored working mill at Talgarth; border castles, cider orchards
  • To eat & drink, apart from our local Pandy Inn, Hay offers numerous gastro pubs, cafes, fun Tapas bar; highly rated St Johns Place restaurant; further afield, the River Cafe, Glasbury; the Felinfachgriffin towards Brecon; the Bridge at Michaelchurch
