The
Experience

In a wide valley with low hills this small house of local stone sits just outside the village among the general greenery and the ambling river Dore. Jenny is a relaxed host and a passionate felt maker and gardener; her pristine half-acre patch is yours to explore and is open with the National Gardens Scheme, by appointment, from May until September. You’ll sleep peacefully in a cosy double with a patchwork quilt, dormer window and floral wallpaper, and the bathroom is sparkling; the single has a better view and shares a shower room. Tuck in to a mostly locally sourced full English in the little breakfast room, then explore paths, fruit trees, lawns and flower beds packed with unusual perennials. South-facing and surrounded by low stone walls, the garden is a haven for wildlife, encouraged by bird and bug boxes, and bee and butterfly-seducing plants; views soar to the Golden Valley. Jenny’s flair with colours and textures is reflected in her garden, lots of seeds are collected to create harmonious flows (and liven up village plant sales), bulbs herald spring and grasses the summer – this is a plantsman’s garden with a cottagey twist. Further afield find bookish Hay.
