The Experience

The Black Mountains are the backdrop to your Herefordshire retreat: this converted bakehouse has all a couple need to escape city life. Inside, tones are neutral, with wheat coloured carpets and soft fabrics in the living room to set off the dark beams above, and a wood-burner stacked with logs. The kitchen isn’t huge but it is well-equipped (and you’ll find some generous basics along with handmade chocolates and local Welsh cakes), so pad through to the conservatory with a coffee, or step out to the sunny garden – both are great birdwatching spots. Two meadows lie just beyond, the start of many footpaths that criss-cross the countryside; the river Monnow meanders by too. The energetic Jones’ use the old mill owner’s house at weekends but otherwise the cottage stands in peaceful seclusion. After a day spent in bookish Hay-on-Wye, a windswept trek on Offa’s Dyke or a drink in the local pub you can head upstairs and collapse into your big zip-link double, with its fresh linen and pretty view to the garden. The award-winning village shop can sell you a fishing licence and there’s plenty of space for storing bikes.

Koula, Brighton

Tivy and Steve made us really welcomed to their adorable property. The cottage was cosy and the private garden beautifully maintained. The grounds and meadows beyond are a great roaming ground with plenty to discover. We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay there.

Isabel, Newton Abbot

Idyllic setting for a cosy cottage. We enjoyed walking in the Black Mountains and in the Monnow and Wye valleys. Contrasting countryside all around!! Tivy and Steve are excellent hosts and we thoroughly recommend the accommodation and the area.

Paula, Beaminster

This is the third time we have stayed in the truly beautiful Monnow River Cottage, which says it all really. It is a perfect getaway for a couple set within stunning grounds. The cottage is just lovely - really well-equipped with a huge comfortable bed and lovely sunroom to relax in after walking in the wonderful countryside surrounding the cottage. Tivy and Steve are wonderful hosts - welcoming and Helpful but also discreet too if you want your privacy. I can't recommend this cottage highly enough.

Tom, London

A magical place. The cottage is the old bakehouse next to the mill/mill house where the hosts live. There is a small but well-equipped kitchen (including a welcome pack of local produce), a gorgeous cosy sitting room with log burner, a huge conservatory and a bathroom. The first floor is a vaulted bedroom with an enormous comfy bed and WC/basin. There are several acres of garden/fields by a river, and an excellent village shop round the corner. The owners were hugely friendly and helpful, and the location is perfect for hikers - miles of beautiful routes on your doorstep. Can't wait to return!
