The Experience
The Black Mountains are the backdrop to your Herefordshire retreat: this converted bakehouse has all a couple need to escape city life. Inside, tones are neutral, with wheat coloured carpets and soft fabrics in the living room to set off the dark beams above, and a wood-burner stacked with logs. The kitchen isn’t huge but it is well-equipped (and you’ll find some generous basics along with handmade chocolates and local Welsh cakes), so pad through to the conservatory with a coffee, or step out to the sunny garden – both are great birdwatching spots. Two meadows lie just beyond, the start of many footpaths that criss-cross the countryside; the river Monnow meanders by too. The energetic Jones’ use the old mill owner’s house at weekends but otherwise the cottage stands in peaceful seclusion. After a day spent in bookish Hay-on-Wye, a windswept trek on Offa’s Dyke or a drink in the local pub you can head upstairs and collapse into your big zip-link double, with its fresh linen and pretty view to the garden. The award-winning village shop can sell you a fishing licence and there’s plenty of space for storing bikes.

We booked Munnow River Cottage to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and were blown away with the cottage and it's surroundings as soon as we arrived. It was just so beautiful. We loved the extensive grounds that we had access to, the riiver, the fact that we could walk from the cottage and the old Mill. Steve and Tivy were and the lovely Steve and Tivy who were on hand recommending places to eat and Steve kindly showed us around the mill. It was great to have a village pub and general store within walking distance. We completely chilled and relaxed.

What a wonderful little cottage, tucked away to guarantee peace and quiet, but within walking distance of a local village shop and pub. Tivy and Steve were welcoming hosts, keen to share their beautiful location. Set amongst trees and fields with a tributary of the river Monnow flowing past the garden it really is a nature lovers paradise. We enjoyed walks, pub lunches and evenings curled up on the sofa, tending the log burner and listening to the owls. The cottage is spotless and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. We would love to return....

What a delightful place to holiday. We arrived to a warm welcome from Tivy and Steve as well as a very warm cottage thanks to the woodburner. The cottage was perfect, comfy bed, well appointed and in such a beautiful setting. Plenty of info of the area supplied for walking, shopping, eating and just strolling their fields and mooching by the river was lovely in itself. The local community store has everything required from locally baked bread to local gins and only 5 minutes walk away. Have already booked a week back at the cottage in 2020 which says it all really, can't wait!

We stayed at this charming riverside cottage for a long weekend. After a fantastic walk with incredible views over the English-Welsh border it was great to come back to a cosy wood-burner. The cottage was very clean, with lots of fresh flowers dotted about. We took Steve and Tivy's tip to go for Sunday lunch at the Carpenters arms which we'd also thoroughly recommend. All in all a very relaxing stay and we'd love to return.

Lovely stay at Tivy and Steve's cottage in September. Very clean and cosy with beautiful walks from the cottage in the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons a short drive away. The gardens around the cottage are gorgeous and there is even a village shop a 5 minute walk down the road which is very handy for such a peaceful location.
