Herons, kingfishers, badgers… all find their way to your wildflower meadow. In front is the Peren, with its own part-canopied barbecue terrace. You enter this superb barn conversion through a two-storey window – once the old threshing door – and the sense of space is the first thing to hit you. Find a wonderful open-plan living area, stylish, contemporary, with a country palette and geo-thermal underfloor heating. There’s a big sofa in front of a wood-burner, books and games tucked under the stairs, a welcome hamper of local produce on the little kitchen table. Upstairs are feather pillows on delicious beds and an exciting glass walkway to a spotless family bathroom with stone floors and a double-ended bath. For children, it’s heaven: rabbit-spotting in the meadow, play equipment outside, a toy box to explore. Owners Simon and Andrew did their stint in London and moved here for the green life; they have an organic smallholding nearby and they settle you in on arrival. You can walk to Hay-on-Wye along the B road (two miles) for lunch and a browse around the bookshops. It’s perfect.
