The Experience
Herons, kingfishers, badgers and weasels – just a few of the visitors to your glorious acre of wildflower meadow, the setting for the Peren, a 19th century restored barn.
Owners Simon and Andrew have great green credentials. They run an organic smallholding nearby and have done what they can to make the barn eco-friendly while keeping it up to date and chic, including a ground source heat pump to keep you warm, with a wood burning stove for back up.
There’s a part-canopied barbecue terrace overlooking the meadow for summer meals in the great outdoors. If you fancy spending a night under canvas you can pitch your tent in the meadow. Kids can really run wild here, and in the evenings everyone can enjoy a bit of rabbit spotting or raid the supply of books and games under the stairs.

Our fourth stay at the Peren and it is still as dreamy as always : Morning runs around Hay Bluff and slow afternoons drinking coffee in the garden listening to the birds - blissful ! We are always trying to work out when we can rebook to stay again. Huge Thanks !

Glorious stay at The Peren . Swimming in the Wye every day. Saw Kingfishers, egrets and so many Buzzards and Red Kites. Fantastic to hear the Tawny owls at The Peren and even more special to hear the churring of the rare Nightjar at dawn and dusk . Thankyou Simon and Andrew for such a special place. Spotlessly clean, delicious coffee and extra treats. Masie the Lurcher loved it so much especially the freedom of the big garden and the rabbits to chase ! And we really recommend the Bridge Inn for food in Michaelchurch.

It was beautiful in the photos but the reality beat everything ! What a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the Summer. We enjoyed the beautiful town of Hay On Wye and spent a day canoeing on the Wye to escape the heat . Furthermore the beautiful garden and house was all we needed.

Thankyou Simon and Andrew. We've had a fantastic weekend retreat in The Peren. Such a beautifully designed house. It’s been a joy, too, watching so many birds back and front : blue tits, great tits, Bullfinches, Goldfinches, Chaffinches, nuthatches, Goldcrest, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, robins, dunnocks, sparrows. missile thrush and a very fat squirrel ! Felt at home from the get go. Will be back.

To walk through the door of the Peren is to be surrounded by a comfy sophistication and style that Simon and Andrew have created with much thought, care and love. Each time we return, the sense of calm and restorative relaxation that accompanies a visit is there from the very start and always leaves us feeling physically and emotionally recharged. The garden is teeming with wildlife, walks in the stunning Herefordshire countryside are within easy reach, and Hay remains a book lover's paradise. It all makes for a winning formula that we've enjoyed over many years with our two growing boys.

We can see why so many previous visitors to The Peren have been repeat visits . A real home from home, very peaceful , everything we could have needed and more. A great base to explore the area.

Our third visit! This year, courtesy of the Hay Festival, we have been to a war-torn hospital with Dr David Nott, walked to Lübeck with JS Bach and Horatio Clare...travelled Underland with Robert Macfarlane, as well as visiting locations as varied as Middle England, Greece, Moominvalley, Vietnam and Ambridge. Non-Festival highlights ... a walk on Hergest Ridge serenaded by skylarks, mooching in Hay, the obligatory Shepherds ice creams and meeting the local wildlife... a fox, a barn owl, a heron, a nonchalant badger ... . All this from the ever-welcoming, ever-beautiful “base camp” - The Peren

We loved this place! A tasteful, stylish yet practical barn conversion which looks exactly as good as the website photos. Simon and Andrew were friendly and helpful yet unobtrusive. We enjoyed several sunny evenings with a glass of wine in the peaceful garden. Thank you the Peren, our batteries are recharged!

Thanks to Andrew and Simon for another fabulous stay!! This was our second visit, and it was just as luxurious and relaxing as we remembered it to be. The barn is kitted out with everything you could possibly need, including wonderful Neal's Yard toiletries. There's a great supply of leaflets/maps and ideas for things to do, and Andrew/Simon provide a detailed list of local attractions/walks and fab restaurants. We can't wait to visit again!

This is such a gem, we wanted for nothing and were so cosy and comfortable in this home from home. Beautiful setting and fabulous attention to detail in every way from the overall design and furnishings to welcoming flowers and provisions. Lovely walks straight from the front door as well as beyond and the joys of Hay on Wye round the corner. We keep coming back and never want to leave!

Location
The neighbourhood
Despite the rural setting, you’re only two miles from book-loving Hay on Wye. If food is more your thing, there are good pubs and Michelin-starred restaurants tucked away in the hills and along the river Wye - your hosts can give you their top ten list. The Wye Valley & the Brecon Beacons National Park are a magnet for walkers, while thrill seekers can try horse riding, mountain biking, canoeing, foraging and gliding. Hereford is a 45-minute drive.
Local points of interest from Simon Forrester & Andrew Craven
- Just 5 mins drive to Hay On Wye - the Internationally famous quirky town of books. Independent shops, cafes, pubs + a boutique cinema provide lots of mooching opportunities. And lets not forget our unique river beach at The Warren for a glorious picnic !
- Walks for all ages and abilities in stunning scenery in the Wye Valley & the Brecon Beacons National Park. And for the more adventurous there is horse riding, mountain biking, canoeing, foraging courses and gliding. We send advance info so you can book.
- Hay has long had a reputation for independent thinking & eccentricity. The book shops & the Hay Festival have led much of this but all year round there are events, courses and gatherings. And who knows, like us, you might decide to never leave.
- Foodie heaven. Tucked away in the hills and along the river Wye are lots of good pubs and Michelin starred restaurants providing good food at affordable prices. None of them are super formal ... just good food and atmosphere. We will send you our top tips.
- Hereford (45 minutes drive) is improving fast. Not only is it home of the oldest map in the world (the mappa mundi at the Hereford Cathedral) it is now gaining a foodie reputation with The Reading Rooms winning The Observer's Award 2017 Best Sunday Lunch.
- The Peren has its own very private enclosed one acre garden with lots of peace and space to run around and wear out the young ones and Fido. We pride ourselves on our work to improve our wildlife. We now have Red Kites flying over & a family of weasels.

Introducing
Simon Forrester & Andrew Craven
Simon and Andrew are considerate hosts – friendly and helpful if needed, but otherwise unobtrusive, happy to leave you to enjoy the rural yet sophisticated idyll they have created. They’re full of useful hints and tips about local walks and activities and the local food scene. Self-confessed wildlife nerds, they love the idea of creating a green place which replenishes tired bodies and minds.
We’ve had a fabulous stay in the gorgeous Peren. Thanks for the goodies. We loved the flapjacks. We enjoyed browsing the bookshops and we loved the Hay Market on Thursday . Lovely walks for the children and dog up Hergest Croft Ridge , near Kington , and a short walk around the Pwil y Wrack Nature Reserve. We thought The Peren was gorgeous, with everything we needed and more. We loved the warm fire, comfortable beds, huge garden and the children thought the glass floor was super fun. We would definitely like to return to The Peren and explore more of the area .
