Take the whole smart, airy place for extended family gatherings – roam the estate, head for Cambridge, London is only 20 mins by train!

Read guest comments

King's Cross 20 minutes, Cambridge a 30-minute drive and 600 rolling Hertfordshire acres, complete with vineyard, woods and adventure playground to explore! This area used to supply milk to London and cows still graze the lush pasture surrounding the Carters' smartly renovated 19th-century lapboard barns and Tudor farmhouse. The barns are ideal for an extended family gathering – with kit for all ages, from high chairs to high-end coffee machines. Each unit has its own small paved outdoor area, and barbecue; all centre on the big, shared gravel-edged green, with its flower borders. There's a barn for parking, one for laundry, another with a whopping biomass boiler, which delivers all the water and underfloor heating you'll need – though there are pleasing wood-burning stoves too. Well-equipped kitchens come with sleek granite worktops; bedrooms with Egyptian cotton bed linen, deeply comfortable mattresses and state-of-the-art bathrooms. The feel throughout is unfussily stylish and restful, with plenty of wood, light and calm colours. Good cycling and golfing country too.

  • Historic Hatfield House with its world famous gardens are close by, as is Knebworth Country House, scene of famous pop concerts and now hosting a dinosaur park; from Roman St Albans to space age Duxford Air Museum we have places of interest for all ages.
  • Traditional butchers and locally sourced meat and vegetables are one of the joys of the area, which has a long history of providing for London's tables (and fireplaces as wood was also shipped down to the Thames to keep London warm).
  • Jump on a train to London (quickest journey 20 mins from Stevenage). See a show, have dinner and be back under the stars at Lordship's Barns before midnight... Or treat yourselves to a day out wandering around the colleges in Cambridge.

"Superb accommodation in The Granary. Spotlessly clean and well appointed. Good heating system and super log fire. Perfect communication with owners and an attentive site manager. We have not stayed in a better self catering home anywhere. Thank you."

"On a recommendation, we visited Lordship's Barns with some friends and their children for a weekend. We had an absolutely wonderful time. We stayed in the Granary, which had ample for 4 adults and 3 children. Everything about the property was top class and extremely well presented - comfortable, clean and well thought through. It's in a very rural location and far enough from any main roads to ensure that the evenings are silent (except for the welcome animal life) and sitting on the veranda as the sun went down was suitably peaceful."

"The property is gorgeous, it is all done to an impeccable high standard; comfortable, spacious, well laid out. The children all loved it - just out of the back there is a swing, slide and climbing frame and they could just run up there after breakfast and play, far enough away to have fun and close enough for the adults to keep an eye on them without having to supervise. The adventure playground is a stroll for everyone but not too far to carry a 2 year old who decided not to walk - and it is brilliant fun. Cots and toys provided. Wonderful countryside."

"What a beautiful place! The barn was lovely, really comfortable. We had everything we needed and the kids really loved the freedom of the space outside and playground at the top of the hill. The adventure playground was simply magical and a great weekend was had by all, thank you! "
