The
Experience

Anne’s creative flair shines brightly at her house in leafy Hertfordshire. An artist, filmmaker and production designer for theatre and opera, she’s a self-styled ‘junk’ creative. This has been the family home for nearly 30 years so it’s filled with books, Anne’s paintings and curiosities, and interesting things at every turn. Dating from the 1850s with attractive Gothic-shaped windows it sits behind a white picket fence in a verdant half acre of garden; there’s an annexe too where Anne and Steve stay when they’re not travelling. Inside find decoupage furniture, an open coal fire, a living room with an eclectic mix of velvet sofas and bright pink lampshades, and a large kitchen with a diverse china collection, wood-burner and French doors to the garden. Upstairs to spacious bedrooms with beds dressed in white cotton; one double has an en suite, the rest share a cream bathroom; and back downstairs is a wacky flowery themed loo. Close to golf courses, Hatfield House, Knebworth, the market towns of St Albans and Hertford – and this is also a peaceful base for exploring the capital.

Reviews

The house was perfect for a long weekend. It was close to London, which was great for sightseeing, and the actual house was beautiful. The outside gives a country cottage feel, and inside is classic and quaint. The bedrooms in particular were really spacious and the log fire in the evening was very homely. The owners were very accommodating and friendly.
