The
Experience

Cowes, emblematic of glamorous sailing and dramatic regattas, swarms with sailors in summer and meditates in peace all winter. Every conceivable craft is berthed along the pontoons by the Solent. Just the place for lovers of sea and sail, beach and jetty. Backed by a wooded park, 24a fronts onto the heart of old Cowes with its colourful fishermen’s cottages. The new three-storey house is Danish-style inside with steep stairs, a big, bright living space – high ceilings, white walls and luscious timber cupboards, chunky oak dining table and snuggle chair – opening to a generous deck with a big table for al fresco dining. The other end overlooks the leafy park. Gorgeous uncluttered bedrooms, from the smallest single with extra pull-out to the largest on the top floor with sea views, have white furniture, beautiful built-in cupboards and soft blue seaside touches. Highly sleep-inducing rooms. Bathrooms are equally sleek and handsome. Walk to the high street, waterside cafés and regatta-watching spots, or book some sailing for yourselves. Take the coastal path to Gurnard for lunch at the famous Woodvale pub.

Local points of interest from Olivia Chenevix-Trench

  • 24a is three minutes' walk from Cowes High Street, with its bustling sea views, marinas and sailing clubs. Shopping opportunities abound - from 'anything sailing' to fabulous independent gift shops and galleries to irresistible delis.
  • Enjoy a Minghella’s ice cream on the Esplanade while you watch the liners, ferries, and yachts go by; or get more hands-on with a sailing course - on offer at UKSA, GirlsForSail, Flying Fish... you can even learn to scuba dive at Island Divers.
  • The High Street also offers copious eating and drinking options - cosy traditional pubs, contemporary bistros and cafes, fine dining, gourmet burgers, rustic-chic European, seafood, Indian, Italian, Basque... have another ice cream while you decide!
  • 24a backs onto landscaped Northwood Park - bask in the leafy atmosphere without leaving the kitchen! The Victorian 17-acre park boasts sea views, rare trees, a little children's play park, and free tennis courts (just bring your racquets and tennis ball).
  • Nearby Northwood House is host to many events through the year such as the IOW Literary Festival, ComicCon, classical music concerts, antique fairs and fetes... you can even get married there!
  • Cowes is within 45 mins drive of all the Island’s beautiful beaches and countryside, and is on the famous Coastal Path. Zip back to the mainland on foot in just 25 mins via the Cowes Red Jet. Car ferry options include East Cowes, Yarmouth and Fishbourne.
