The
Experience

Ferns and palms flourish on the south side of the island and wild goats and red squirrels scamper. Pitt’s Keep, a single-storey Victorian villa 50 yards from Bonchurch village – ancient church, duck pond and inn – comes with a magical cliffside garden and a dazzling view from every front room. For city escapees and stylistas, Pitt’s Keep is the bee’s knees; and a great find for hikers and families. A ten-minute walk gets you to Monk’s Bay (beach, crabs, rock pools) while big beaches beckon at Sandown and Shanklin. As for the house, it’s been renovated – beautifully – with a designer’s eye. The layout is quirky and the light floods in, to a sheltered gravelled courtyard, a bright lofty sitting room, a dining room, a conservatory and a kitchen in gothic-country style (fab for cooks). Imagine white walls, modern art, sisal carpeting, mid-century furniture. The mini hamper is a generous extra and you can stock up and fine-dine in Ventnor. Return to bedrooms full of beauty and character. Fancy a sea view? Pick the double with the Victorian crenallated terrace, or the large twin.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Rupert & Trudy Large

  • Stroll around beautiful Bonchurch, admiring the Vicorian Villas once frequented by literary greats. Feed the hungry ducks in the enchanting pond. Wander down to the 11th Century Church, nestled in woodland. Pop into the popular Bonchurch Inn for a pint.
  • Enjoy the microclimate of Ventnor with its sandy beach and Botanical Gardens and park. Children paddle in the IOW shaped paddling pool, situated next to the picturesque Ventnor Haven with fishing boats bobbing about. Hire a Victorian beach hut for the day.
  • For foodies, head for Ventnor with its award winning cafes and restaurants. Everyone claims to do the best crab sandwich but our favourite is the Seapot, on the seafront between Bonchurch & Ventnor. Quench your thirst at the pub on the beach, Spyglass Inn
  • Find out why Islanders try and keep Steephill Cove a secret. Walk along a stunning path from Ventor which meanders west along the clifftop to a charming Cove. Indulge in freshly caught Seafood at the crab shack whilst the children explore the rock pools.
  • Visit the golden sandy beach of Shanklin and hire a canoe. Explore the fascinating and magical chine, a stunning tree lined gorge leading to the beach. Explore Shanklin old village with its pretty thatched tea rooms.
  • Walk the highest point on IOW, St Boniface Down, behind the property. For a less energetic walk, explore the magic of Bonchurch Landslip with its undulating woodland paths and look for the Devils Chimney. Or 10 min. stroll to Monks Bay, our nearest beach.
