The
Experience

You’d have to be made of stone not to fall in love with this beautifully restored 16th-century farmhouse. It oozes history and charm from the inglenook fireplace and opium bed coffee table in the guest sitting/dining room to the wonky oak boards and its three beautifully furnished en suite bedrooms. Jamie, who grew up here, and Karena are well-travelled and relish hosting guests. Breakfast on lashings of tea and coffee, muesli and local preserves or the full works; read the paper in the pretty suntrap garden. Set in gently undulating Wealden countryside this is perfectly placed for stately piles and grand gardens galore.

Reviews

We really enjoyed our stay at Applebys, the accommodation was very clean and comfortable, especially the lovely open fire in the inglenook fireplace on a very cold evening. We will certainly book again when visiting friends in the area. Mary

A lovely house full of character and comfy beds. Jamie and Karena were very helpful and the perfect hosts. Plenty of activities in the local area, but some days it was just great to relax in the house and gardens. We will be back.

Local points of interest from Jamie & Karena Donald

  • Lovingly restored Tudor Farmhouse with carpenters marks and inglenooks in the Weald's 'golden triangle' between Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and Edenbridge.
  • Great Britons, from Elizabeth 1st to Winston Churchill, have always loved the area. Chartwell, Penshurst Place, Hever Castle, Knole House and Ightam Mote are all within a 10-15 minute drive.
  • Walk or cycle the Eden Valley or the Pilgrims Way. Stroll bucolic footpaths from Penshurst to Tonbridge. Try one of 5 golf courses in the top 100 in England nearby. Or contemplate the stained glass windows by Marc Chagall at Tudeley.
  • The 2nd best village pub in Britain (CAMRA, 2015) is up the road in Sevenoaks Weald, while The Rock at Chiddingstone Hoath has original brick floors, serves ale from barrels and has one of the oldest and strangest pub games in the country.
  • For trivia buffs, Applebys was once the home of Florence Nightingale's coachman. The field opposite was used for polo by Edward VII, and then later by Spitfires in the Battle of Britain.
  • It's lovely countryside, but not remote. Central London is half an hour by train from the local station at Hildenborough, and there's top mall shopping at Tunbridge Wells and Bluewater.
