The Experience

The NGS gardens are dreamy. There are several acres to explore and admire, including immaculate clipped box and topiary, brick, shingle and grass paths, mature trees and swathes of foxgloves; wander down to the benches in the far reaches and listen to the birdsong. Tables and chairs are set out in the summer.

There are two bedrooms in both the guest wing in the main house and the separate cottage. All is beautifully decorated; beds are topped with the best linen; cushions match sumptuous curtains. The cottage has a kitchenette and conservatory; browse the many books by the wood-burner in the sitting room. The guest wing has an enormous living room with a trio of sofas and a library.

If Georgina and Iain are away a nutritionist/cookery writer prepares breakfast: perhaps a healthy smoothie of the day, homemade granola, compote and sourdough, local cheese and a home-cooked special as well as a traditional English.

Reviews

The interior design is wonderful, so beautifully done, especially in the new rooms in the cottage. It's just perfect. It's an interesting building too, with a history that Georgina and Iain can tell you about. Very peaceful spot with a lovely garden and perfect for visiting lots of lovely gardens in Kent and East Sussex.

Location

The neighbourhood

You’re in hilly Kent countryside, a mile from Horsmonden. The house is at the end of a long drive behind electric gates. The village has a shop and pub, and there's a pub for dinner four miles away, in Matfield. It's a 10-minute drive to the nearest big town, Paddock Wood, which has trains into London (50 minutes) twice an hour. Tunbridge Wells and the gardens at Sissinghurst, Great Dixter and Pashley Manor are all within 20-30 minutes.

Local points of interest from Georgina Stewart

  • So close to London but set in beautiful countryside with some of England's most stunning gardens within easy reach, such as Sissinghurst and Great Dixter. Our gardens rival the best in Kent (according to our NGS visitors) and offer peace and tranquility
  • Built in 1860 this property oozes warmth and charm. Constructed in Wealden stone by the renowned Austen family and offering 10 acres of immaculate gardens to wander in
  • If you want to get away from it all and enjoy peace, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, this house and grounds is perfect for you. There are lot of lovely local walks, National Trust properties, Bewl Water and Bedgebury Forest all close by
  • Beaches at Rye, Hastings, Winchelsea all within easy reach (45 minutes). Lovely local restaurants to explore such as The Poet and The West House
  • There are good pubs to be found in Matfield, Goudhurst and Biddenden that cater for all tastes and budgets.
