The Experience

You’re set back from a country road in this 1876 oast house which couldn’t be lovelier. The fresh, sunny bedroom has views over a colourful cottage garden that teems with birdlife. It’s a gentle stroll from one of the prettiest villages in Kent, with white-clapboard cottages, a fine church and a traditional local pub, The Bell.

Suzy the friendly owner will welcome you and bring you tea and cake in the garden. A generous breakfast served in the original roundel includes Pluckley sausages, fresh-laid eggs and homemade jams.

A network of marked footpaths from the garden take you on country walks; visit in spring to see drifts of bluebells in the woods and apple orchards full of blossom. Use the car for cultured jaunts: Sissinghurst Castle is just ten minutes away, Leeds Castle, Scotney, Great Dixter are all close.

Reviews

We both adored our stay at Suzy's wonderful home set in the most lovely wooded countryside. We slept like logs in the supremely comfortable beds in the pretty bedroom overlooking her exquisite garden. Breakfasts were delicious and generous setting us up for the day. Suzy was the most welcoming of hosts giving us invaluable advice on her favourite gardens and places to visit. She made us feel so at home with her warmth and kindness. Great big thankyou Suzy!!

Theresa, London

Hereford Oast is a fantastic BnB. Suzy is a warm and welcoming host, the bedroom was clean, comfy and quiet and the breakfast was absolutely delicious. A lovely place to stay. Highly recommended.

Clare, Maidenhead

Simply the best! I could not fault this delightful B and B. Perfect in every way from the warmth given upon our arrival to the splendid location and breakfast just first-class, cooked by Suzy - best scrambled eggs ever. Bedroom overlooking the beautiful natural, blooming garden, especially the peonies in June. Cannot wait to go back.

Diana, Northampton

Suzy is a fabulous host. She is generous with recommendations and highly attentive to her guests. After calm nights in the well-appointed room with comfortable beds and garden view she prepares a delicious breakfast. We stayed for a second time in this peaceful setting and we shall return.

Wolfgang, Dresden, Germany

We would thoroughly recommend Hereford Oast from the warm welcome from Jack and Suzy with tea and cake in the beautiful garden through a good night's sleep in the lovely room to the delicious breakfast including eggs from the hens we had to avoid as we drove in. Everything was of a high standard and Suzy paid attention to detail. We stayed two nights and visited Sissinghurst Castle, Leeds Castle, The Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway, and Great Dixter, all within easy reach by car. We ate at The Bell both evenings and would recommend that too. All in all, we had a lovely time.

Simon

We experienced a warm welcome, comfortable room, and a fabulous breakfast. Highly recommended.

Location

The neighbourhood

Smarden village is one of the most picturesque in the county, with half-timbered cottages, a village green for cricket matches and an ancient medieval parish church. It’s an easy walk from the house to several pubs, including The Bell. Hop fields, paddocks and orchards surround the village and there are beautiful walks through the fields and woods. Summer is packed with local fairs and fetes for a genuine English country experience.

Local points of interest from Suzy Hill

  • Sissinghurst Castle; owned and maintained by the National Trust is among the most famous gardens in England and is within 10 minutes drive. These beautiful gardens are open from March to October, the Cafe, Woodland and Lakeside walks throughout the year.
  • Great Dixter Gardens, another famous garden, is less than 30 minutes away, full of wonderful riotous colours, it is one of the most experimental, exciting garden designs anywhere. A must see! Open April to October with the lovely nursery always open.
  • Historic Rye Town, a perfect medieval gem, with shops, cute cafes and restaurants just over half an hour away. Nearby is the great sandy beach at Camber Sands, and fascinating Dungeness with Lighthouse, trendy Fish Shack, Jarmans Cottage and Steam Railway.
  • Kent is full of wonderful Castles to visit! Lovely moated Leeds Castle, with all its attractions, and the National Trust's romantic Scotney Castle are only 20 minutes away. Don't miss Dover Castle's secret wartime tunnels and 1000 exiting years of history.
  • Why not just wander - those beautiful Kent villages and Oast dotted countryside. Pretty pubs and lovely walks wherever you look! Try the free tasting at famous Chapeldown winery at Tenterden, near to Ellen Terry's House or the market at foodie Faversham.
  • No visit to Kent is complete without a day in the historic city of Canterbury, with its Cathedral, city walls and ancient sites, river trips and bustling shops and markets. Fashionable Tunbridge Wells for smart shopping, tea and cocktails - a real treat!

Introducing

Suzy Hill

Suzy Hill is a textile designer and professional gardener; she grows her own vegetables and fruit, and her hens lay free-range eggs for your breakfast. She’s justifiably proud of her garden, especially in summer and spring with the flower beds at their best and the gorgeous magnolia in bloom. She likes to provide her guests with local information and is happy to lend you a map if you want to set off on foot from the garden.
