The Experience

Such a unique place to stay, for guests who delight in a fairytale setting but appreciate 21st-century comforts. From the village street through a grand arch to lawns, fine trees, a pond and the tower soaring into the sky – the grounds are shared with residents of the old castle cottages next door. The ground floor hosts a small museum – all yours during your stay – telling the story of the tower and its restoration. From there a lift whisks you to the floors above, or follow a spiral staircase. It’s all enchanting – heavy drapes at high arched windows, octagonal dining room, kitchen with impressive stained glass, wood-burner in a huge fireplace, a terrace for sunny days. Bedrooms are fit for fairytale royalty – plush super-king silvery bed in the main bedroom, with painted metal pillars supporting a bathroom above; in the others, cosy rugs on wooden floors, antique chairs and brass lamps. Truly one of a kind. Guests who descend from the tower’s airy heights may like Tonbridge for eateries, historic houses (Ightham Mote, Chartwell, Hever Castle…) or the North Downs Way and other trails.

Local points of interest from Christian Tym

  • The Tower itself is a local point of interest. Standing taller than Nelson's Column, it is thought to be the tallest habitable folly in Europe. The stunning Gothic architecture is the reason for its Grade 1* listing.
  • There are so many great, traditional Kentish pubs within a short drive. Best for local beer is the Rose Revived in Hadlow. It is a very short drive or about a ten minute walk.
  • The best pub for food and overall setting (you can sit by the village green and enjoy views of the church) is The Swan at West Peckham. The most historic, dating back to the 16th century, with its fabulous open fire, is the Kentish Rifleman at Dunk's Green
  • The Greensand Ridge Gin Distillery in nearby Tonbridge is well worth a visit. Enjoy an intimate distillery tour, in their old victorian coach house, overlooking the fields and forests of Kent. The Distillery is part of a historic hunting estate.
  • In warmer months, we would really recommend a trip along the river Medway. Kayak hire is available for the more active, or you can simply sit back and enjoy a river cruise. Teapot Island (nr Yalding) has a great cafe (and over 8,000 teapots!)
  • There are many historic places within a short drive - Igtham Mote, Chartwell, Leeds Castle or the local Tonbridge Castle. However, within walking distance is a more secret place - Broadview Gardens in Hadlow. After a relaxing walk, afternoon tea is a must!
